Obviously things have been better when it comes to inter-party relationships. Aside from Abraham Lincoln’s election, the country hasn’t seen an election quite this divisive in a very long time. It has now been a week since election day. And the riots and protests are still happening. The left is scared. The right is angry.

But there seems to be some wisdom coming from unlikely places. Dave Chappelle, Saturday Night Live comedian, has surprised the world with some pretty significant wisdom. He says we wants Trump to succeed.

I think it’s important that I say [this] because they’re marching up the street as we speak. A few weeks ago, I went to the White House for a party. It was the first time I had been there in many years and it was very exciting and BET had sponsored the party … and I saw all those black faces — and Bradley (Cooper) — and I thought about how happy everybody was, these people who had been historically disenfranchised. And it made me feel hopeful and it made me feel proud to be an American and it made me very happy about the prospects of our country. So, in that spirit, I’m wishing Donald Trump luck, and I’m going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too. Thank you very much.

It was a nice spot of realistic grace in the midst of a pretty ugly election and a pretty ugly response following Trump’s presidency was announced early Wednesday morning. It was a bold message and it has the power to make a very real difference in the world moving forward.

Give him a chance. We want him to succeed. He is our president, after all. And if he succeeds it will be because we do as well.
