What’s This “We” Stuff, Colin?

One of Barack Obama’s biggest supporters, Colin Powell[1], is now offering up his sage advice to Republicans,

The Republican party must stop “shouting at the world” and start listening to minority groups if it is to win elections in the 21st century, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday.

…”I think the party has to stop shouting at the world and at the country,”Powell said. “I think that the party has to take a hard look at itself, and I’ve talked to a number of leaders in recent weeks and they understand that.” Powell, who says he still considers himself a Republican, said his party should also stop listening to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

“Can we continue to listen to Rush Limbaugh?” Powell asked. “Is this really the kind of party that we want to be when these kinds of spokespersons seem to appeal to our lesser instincts rather than our better instincts?”

It’s all well and good that Colin Powell “still considers himself a Republican.” If he feels that way, he’s certainly welcome to vote for the GOP nominee in 2012.

That being said, the moment he betrayed the man who made him the first black Secretary of State to support Obama, he lost any and all credibility he may have had in the GOP. You can’t sell out the people who brought you to the dance and then expect to be taken seriously when you come up with a lame excuse for why you stabbed them in the back.

And that’s certainly what Powell’s offering. The GOP has been ignoring Rush Limbaugh and the rest of us on the Right on key issue after key issue for the last few years in order to push policies designed to appeal to squishes like Colin Powell. Moreover, the GOP ran John McCain as its nominee, the champion of GOP moderates and a man who has famously feuded with Rush Limbaugh and conservatives in the GOP. So, Colin Powell got exactly what he says he wanted in a Republican nominee and….drumroll, please…he voted for a Democrat.

So, Colin, spare us your lectures and can this “we” stuff. The moment you turned your back on the Republican Party to stand with the same people who spent eight years calling you an “Uncle Tom” and a “house Negro,” you lost every bit of moral authority you had in the GOP.
