We can see that the bridge is out just up ahead. Fortunately, there is still time to get off the train at the last stop before it plunges into a deep rocky gorge. The movement to dump Trump in Cleveland is building momentum.
Already there are reportedly several hundred delegates prepared to rebel at the convention. That number will grow as his poll numbers continue to collapse. Anti-Trump delegates have been raising money for staff and a legal defense fund, in contrast to Trump, who has conspicuously not been raising money.
If only because Trump has been unwilling to perform even the most basic tasks of a presidential candidate, the growing delegate revolt should come as no surprise.
Brian Fraley's open letter to the delegates makes persuasive points:
Trump has the highest unfavorable rating of any candidate for a major party on record — 70% in the latest Washington Post-ABC poll. His unfavorables with Hispanics is 88%, with African Americans 87%. …
Trump continually says he does not need you…does not need us…does not need the Republican Party. Rather than reach out and attempt to unify the party, he continues to push a divisive and dismissive tone, which damages the brand and hurts down-ticket candidates as they seek independent voters.
As of last month, Trump had only $2.4 million in the bank, raised a mere $14 million and refused to build a small-dollar or large donor operation. Instead, he floated his primary efforts through $44 million in personal loans. In comparison, in 2012 Mitt Romney had already raised nearly $100 million by that time.
Trump’s cult of personality and earned media advantages got him this far, but have reached their limit. He now refuses to build a data operation that would help him and our fellow Republican candidates in November. In 2016, we Republicans were in a position to bridge the digital divide between the parties, but Trump refuses to invest in the nuts and bolts of data collection and analysis. As you know, data is the key to fundraising and get-out-the-vote efforts.
Still, it’s not just a data team Trump eschews. His campaign has less than three dozen paid staff working on its behalf across the country. That’s not a typo. He’s ‘estimated’ he has ‘about 30’ employees. Hillary Clinton has more than 730.
Trump obviously is not serious about winning in November. Republicans had better get serious about dumping him in July.
That Trump’s people have tried to intimidate delegates is reason enough for them to vote against him. Trump consigliere Roger Stone actually threatened to publicize the hotel room numbers of recalcitrant delegates so that Trump’s notoriously thuggish supporters could confront them (and possibly their families) physically.
If you still need arguments, refer to the Courageous Conservatives PAC petition to Free the RNC Delegates:
Whereas: Donald J. Trump has, since becoming prospective Republican nominee, continued his ad hominem attacks against other Republicans and;
Whereas: Evidence released since the Indiana primary shows that Donald J. Trump has allegedly engaged in a pattern of fraud and deception with regard to Trump “University” and the racketeering case where he is a defendant and;
Whereas: Donald J. Trump continues refusing to release his income tax returns, college and post-graduate transcripts or his New York Times interview tape where he contradicts previously held positions and;
Whereas: Donald J. Trump has accelerated the use of ethnic stereotypes in a pathetic attempt to appeal to bigotry and;
Whereas: Donald J. Trump previously endorsed Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale over Ronald Reagan and called for George W. Bush’s impeachment and;
Whereas: Donald J. Trump is not a conservative and;
Whereas: Donald J. Trump has not only failed to unite the Republican Party but in fact is driving out many of our longest supporters and;
Whereas: Donald J. Trump is demonstrating mental instability and;
Whereas: Donald J. Trump’s … inability to transform from reality TV star to party leader is creating a crisis of confidence within the Republican Party and;
Whereas: The 2472 elected delegates to the July Republican National Convention in Cleveland are entrusted by party voters to look out for the best interests of all Republican voters and candidates and;
Whereas: Donald J. Trump’s continued actions, instability, incoherence and refusal to lead the party is having a negative effect on Republican candidates everywhere;
We DEMAND: That all 2472 delegates be released from their pledges to support candidates on the First and in some cases subsequent ballots and that all delegates be allowed to exercise their responsibility to pick the strongest Republican candidate based on their conscience and be freed from any obligation to support a candidate they do not believe represents the values and principles of the Republican Party.
The Speaker of the House has already given delegates his blessing to vote their conscience — i.e., vote for anyone but Trump.
To attack Trump is not to support his fellow reptilian New York liberal Shrillary. It is to encourage those in a position to do so to put an end to Trump’s disastrous candidacy before it costs us the future. The 2016 presidential election has already been lost. The goal now is to rescue down-ballot candidates so that Shrillary has some resistance, and see to it that the GOP has a chance in 2020. If you think the situation is bad now, imagine what it will be like if Washington becomes a single-party Democrat town like Chicago.
