According To Jon Kyl, Most Americans Love The Immigration Bill

“After a week at home with their constituents, the Senate architects of a delicate immigration compromise are increasingly convinced that they will hold together this week to pass an overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws, with momentum building behind one unifying theme: Today’s immigration system is too broken to go unaddressed.

Congress’s week-long Memorial Day recess was expected to leave the bill in tatters. But with a week of action set to begin today, the legislation’s champions say they believe that the voices of opposition, especially from conservatives, represent a small segment of public opinion. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), who led negotiations on the bill for his party, said the flood of angry calls and protests that greeted the deal two weeks ago has since receded every day.

“You just have to recognize you will get 300 calls, you’ll get conflicts at town hall meetings — all of them negative,” said Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who consulted with Kyl and hopes to carry a similar deal through the House in July. “The last few days have really turned things around.” — The Washington Post[1]

Are Jon Kyl and Jeff Flake right? No? Then pick up that phone, write that email, send that fax[2] — heck, do all three if you’re so inclined.

But, you’ve already called? That’s OK, call them again because apparently, they’re under the impression that, “(t)he last few days have really turned things around.”

But, whom do you contact?

#1) Pick up the phone and call your Senators. You can get the numbers and/or email addresses of your home state senators here[3].

#2) Call the National Republican Senatorial Committee at (202) 675-6000 and let them know that you will not support the reelection of any senator in 2008 who votes for the amnesty bill in the Senate.

#3) Call the Republican National Committee at (202) 863-8500 (option 1) and let them know you will not support any candidate in 2008 who votes for the amnesty bill in the Senate (Incidentally, a lot of you must be doing this already because when I called about 10 minutes ago, the mailbox was full.)

Again, if you don’t want to call them, email them or fax them.[4]

Update #1: From the comments section (anybody else having this experience?):

“Kyl and many other Senators do not want to know what their constituents think. The reason that contacts are fading are that they are purposely blocked. I tried on several occassions to phone my Senators and Republican Senate Leaders. I was never able to get through to a live person or leave a message because they turned their message systems off.

I have sent dozens of e-mails with tracking to see when they are opened. Less than 50% are even opened and I have only received two responses, one form letter and one auto response telling me to buzz off from Senator Graham’s office saying he will not respond because I am not from his state.

Kyl and company can push this heaping pile of BS through, but they will alienate many life long Republicans who have been generous with votes and dollars over the years. I won’t be insulted and called a biggot, nativist or naive. I am none of these things, I merely want to see our Laws respected and for our government to show a willingness control its borders before taking any other action.

I have never in my life considered leaving the Republican party until now. If dedicated Republicans like me are ready to walk away what exactly to Kyl, Graham and McCain expect to gain?” — rhinkel
