Hands Down Mitt Romney Won The Presidential Debate Last Night

Last night was a very very good night for Mitt Romney. When you have Chris Matthews asking, “Where was Obama last night?” You know it was bad for Obama. Mitt was commanding and smart. Here is Chris Matthews having a bit of a meltdown.

Last night on twitter was fun for us conservatives, but imagine our surprise when Liberal comedian Bill Maher, who has donated $1 million to Pres Obama tweeted this:

“i can’t believe i’m saying this, but Obama looks like he DOES need a teleprompter.” Also this:: “Obama made a lot of great points tonight. Unfortunately, most of them were for Romney.”

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore tweeted this: “Fire all debate consultants now.: This is what happens when [you] pick John Kerry as your debate coach.”

If one word could define Mitt Romney last night it would be “prepared.” He knew the numbers, he knew his plan and he explained them well. His responses to Obama was solid. He didn’t come across as stiff, and he even got a couple of laughs. : Romney did a good job of distinguishing himself as the candidate who understands the free market and how it works, and how he can make America work again.

It was interesting to me how Romney always addressed Obama and not the moderator, which kept the camera going to a split screen. In that split screen Obama was always looking down. It was very bad optics for Obama. : Mitt was simply much more confident and more energetic. The best part for me: was when Romney called out Obama on always bashing oil subsidies, which Obama claimed gave $2 billion away. So, Romney blasted him by saying Obama’s green-energy subsidies have given over $90 billion away. Then in went in for the kill by saying Obama: isn’t: : just picking winners and losers, : he’s only picking the losers! : So true! That was so right on and perfect. I loved it.

‘Romney told stories of people he had met while campaigning, and it gave him a real person feeling that he needed to display for undecided voters. : He also controlled the debate as the moderator, Jim Lehrer, just let him. It was nice to see a moderator not try “gotcha” questions, and just the let the men debate.

There is a reason why Obama may not have been as prepared as you might expect. Obama has not faced any tough questions, or been challenged in any significant way. He goes on Letterman and The View and the hosts drool over him. He jokes that he is “eye candy” to the gals at The View. This is where he is the most comfortable. There are no hard questions about policy details. Romney confronted him with hard numbers, not generalities. : Obama didn’t quite know how to react. This is good news for conservatives and Republicans, but it’s not over by a long shot. There is a big hill to climb in the coming weeks. Let us not grow too confident. This will be the toughest fight of our lives. We got in one good punch, but the bell hasn’t rung yet.
