Senate Democrats unveiled an immigration reform proposal on Thursday, which includes more money, more cops, more equipment, and:
It would create a national ID — which is dubbed a “biometric social security card.” Though Democrats insist that it is not an ID card and can only be used for employment purposes.
Yeah, their assurances do nothing for the libertarian heebie-jeebies running up my leg right now.
The ID card would be required. If you don’t have it, you can’t get a job. From the actual 26-page proposal (link opens a .pdf):
Employers hiring workers in the future will be required to use the newly created Biometric Enrollment, Locally-stored Information, and Electronic Verification of Employment (BELIEVE) System as a means of verification.
Correction: if you don’t have it, you can’t get an official, above-the-table job. I wonder what the effect on the underground economy will be, if this comes to pass?
But that’s hardly the most interesting question. It’s amazing — yes, amazing — that Democrats would have come out with this particular idea at this particular time.
In order to get a job, you’ll have to produce the I.D. In order to get the I.D., you’ll have to produce other identifying documents to the Social Security Administration.
Considering all the “papers, please” rhetoric and Nazi-evoking hyperbole and fascist police-state hysterics flying around in Arizona today…isn’t this exactly the same thing? Isn’t it just as “papers, please” as the Arizona law? Won’t it largely affect one particular minority group, just like the Arizona law?
It’s amazing that Senate Democrats put this forward. It’ll be even more amazing if these same pro-lawbreaking protest groups don’t go just as ballistic over it as they have over AZ.
Or, no, wait: that won’t be so amazing, will it?
