Katie Couric: The 15 Million Dollar Whine Machine

Katie Couric[1] explained her mediocre performance at CBS with this quip,

On Americans’ reactions to a woman anchoring the evening news: “I think there probably remains an underlying discomfort in this country with women in power.”

This is obviously sour grapes because,

#1) If Katie had really believed this beforehand, she would have turned down the job.

#2) If CBS had really believed this beforehand, they wouldn’t have offered her the job.

Katie Couric hasn’t suffered because she’s a woman — to the contrary, being a woman has been a big advantage to her.

She has gotten 10 times as much free publicity via fawning articles written about her as any man would have in the same situation. Moreover, any man who bled audience share like Katie would have probably long since been fired. In other words, her gender is probably the only reason she still has a job.

Yet it’s, “yak, yak, yak, they don’t like me because I’m a woman, whine, whine, whine.” She gets $15 million a year to post lousy ratings and all she does is complain that she’s failing because America is full of sexists.

Give the rest of us a break and stop kvetching, you crybaby.
