Misc Commentary For October 18, 2004

Since Kerry’s “Mary Cheney remark” has gotten — and continues to get — so much ink, I thought it might be worthwhile to do a quick wrap-up on the subject.

The reason Kerry’s debate caught everyone’s eye is because John Edwards inserted Mary Cheney into his debate with Dick Cheney and everybody noticed it because although Cheney was gracious about it, he also declined to rebut Edwards comments rather than continue to drag his daughter into the spotlight. Saturday Night Live even focused on that when they did their parody of the debate.

Had that been all that happened, it would have probably ended there.

But then, when Kerry AGAIN mentioned Mary Cheney in his debate with Bush, it really stood out. And of course, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Kerry and Edwards were mentioning that Mary Cheney was gay in an effort to appeal to any homophobes who wouldn’t vote for a man with a gay daughter.

Using a child against her father that way quite understandably didn’t sit well with voters and the fact that John Edwards’ wife really got nasty about it[1] while Kerry’s campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill called Mary Cheney “fair game” didn’t help.

Kerry and Edwards should have just left Mary Cheney out of it.

Vladimir Putin spells out the painfully obvious truth…

“Any unbiased observer understands that attacks of international terrorist organizations in Iraq, especially nowadays, are targeted not only and not so much against the international coalition as against President Bush,” Putin said.

“International terrorists have set as their goal inflicting the maximum damage to Bush, to prevent his election to a second term.

“If they succeed in doing that, they will celebrate a victory over America and over the entire anti-terror coalition,” Putin said.

“In that case, this would give an additional impulse to international terrorists and to their activities, and could lead to the spread of terrorism to other parts of the world.”

This is going to really chafe liberals and even some of the conservatives reading today will find this harsh, but I’m going to say it anyway because it’s absolutely true. If John Kerry wins, many of the same people who celebrated the 9/11 attacks against America will celebrate again. That’s because getting an appeaser like John Kerry in the White House would be the best thing to happen to America hating terrorists since 9/11.

Like I said, harsh but true…

So the NAACP is tied to a crack for fake voter registrations scam[2]?

“The Defiance County Sheriff’s Office…alleges that (Chad) Staton filled out over 100 voter registration forms that were fictitious. Staton was to be paid for each registration form that he could get citizens to fill out. However, Staton himself filled out the registrations and returned them to the woman who hired him from Toledo, Ohio. Deputies allege that Staton was paid crack cocaine for the falsified registrations.

Defiance Deputies along with Toledo Police Department detectives conducted a search warrant of a residence on Woodland in Toledo, believed to be the home of the woman who hired Staton to solicit voter registration. Officers confiscated drug paraphernalia along with voter registration forms from the home. The occupant of the home, Georgianne Pitts, age 41, advised law enforcement, along with Ohio B.C.I.&I., that she had been recruited by Thaddeus J. Jackson, II, of Cleveland, to obtain voter registrations. Pitts admitted to paying Staton crack cocaine for the registrations in lieu of money.

A business card provided by Pitts indicated that Jackson is the Assistant NVF Ohio Director of the NAACP National Voter Fund.”

This may turn out to be one of the more bizarre political stories of this election cycle….

The Volokh Conspiracy[3] runs down Kerry’s unimpressive 20 year career in the Senate. Mediocrity, John Kerry is thy name…

The Bush campaign’s backup lists five bills, which we verified:

S.791: Authorizes $53 million over four years to provide grants to woman-owned small businesses. (1999)

S.1206: Names a federal building in Waltham, Massachusetts after Frederick C. Murphy, who was killed in action during World War II and awarded (posthumously) the Medal of Honor. (1994)

S.1636: A save-the-dolphins measure aiming “to improve the program to reduce the incidental taking of marine mammals during the course of commercial fishing operations.” (1994)

S.1563: Funding the National Sea Grant College Program, which supports university-based research, public education, and other projects “to promote better understanding, conservation and use of America’s coastal resources.” (1991)

S.423: Granting a visa and admission to the U.S. as a permanent resident to Kil Joon Yu Callahan. (1987)

The Bush campaign left out two bills authored by Kerry which passed the Senate and later became law in a slightly different form approved by the House, under the same titles and mostly same substance. (This occurs when House and Senate versions differ so slightly that one house adopts the other’s version rather than go to the trouble of a House-Senate conference to work out a compromise.) The citations were provided by the Kerry campaign, and we verified them:

H.R.1900 (S.300): Awarded a congressional gold medal to Jackie Robinson (posthumously), and called for a national day of recognition. (2003)

H.R.1860 (S.856): Increased the maximum research grants for small businesses from $500,000 to $750,000 under the Small Business Technology Transfer Program. (2001)

…We’ve also included — as did The AP — four “joint resolutions” that are not technically “bills” but which have the same force when passed by both houses and are signed into law by the president. All four created national events:

S.J.Res.158: To make the week of Oct. 22 – Oct. 28, 1989 “World Population Awareness Week.” (1989)

S.J.Res.160: To renew “World Population Awareness Week” for 1991. (1991)

S.J.Res.318: To make Nov. 13, 1992 “Vietnam Veterans Memorial 10th Anniversary Day.” (1992)

S.J.Res.337: To make Sept. 18, 1992 “National POW/MIA Recognition Day.” (1992)

How can people even consider a man with a record like this for the most important job on earth? It’s like hiring a kid who chopped up a couple of frogs in science class as a brain surgeon…
