Here’s a shocking story: black students barred from running for class president at a Mississippi middle school.
My first thought – like yours, I’ll bet – was: you have got to be kidding me.
But no. That was the policy, and it was so ingrained into their “that’s just how we do it” that it wasn’t even hidden. Nobody, apparently, thought there was anything wrong.
Thankfully, the school board is reversing the policy:
The school board in Nettleton, Miss., voted Friday to reverse its policy under which race determined whether a candidate could run for class positions, including president.
According to a memo sent home with students last week, African-American students could not run for class president in Nettleton Middle School this school year. However, the board voted at an emergency session Friday to drop that policy, according to Craig Ford, a reporter with the NBC News affiliate WTVA, who attended the meeting.
So, good. Even so, it’s hard to believe, in this day and age, that people didn’t notice this. That nobody thought: y’know, we shouldn’t be doing this.
We should mention: it wasn’t a simple case of white-over-black racism:
That’s part of the memo the school district sent home with students. Note how some positions are whites-only, while others are blacks-only, with the black students getting the less-prestigious spots.
Let’s read more:
According to the district’s statement, the practice had been in use for more than 30 years with whites and blacks rotating among offices annually.
“It is the belief of the current administration that these procedures were implemented to help ensure minority representation and involvement in the student body,” Superintendent Russell Taylor said in a statement.
So: this wasn’t a case of out-and-out anti-black racism. It’s affirmative action, making sure that both races get a place regardless of who wants the position, or who has support.
Clumsy, blockheaded affirmative action, sure. But affirmative action, nonetheless. Somebody, sometime, thought they were doing black students a favor.
I suppose we should be grateful that nobody feels that way now.
Which still leaves the question: don’t they have any Hispanics? And what about mixed-race children?
