Too Old? Too Unhealthy? Too Bad!

That’s what British doctors[1] are suggesting:

Doctors are calling for NHS treatment to be withheld from patients who are too old or who lead unhealthy lives.

Smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving some operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone.

Wait a minute – isn’t the major criticism of health insurance companies here that they only wish to insure the healthy?

And yet here’s a government universal health care system essentially suggesting the same thing.

Ironic, no?
