Melissa Clouthier Barack Obama Speechifying Fail: Dan Riehl And John Hawkins Discuss The President’s Speech & The Republicans
(Read WP posts from Melissa Clouthier) | (Read MT posts from Melissa Clouthier) | rss

Was the President's address a win? In the short term, just like Bill Clinton, yes. Did Bill Clinton get health care reform passed? Don't think so. The speech, like most Obama soliloquies was rife with Strawmen. Neo Neocon knocks 'em down.

Do Americans want a mandate to get insurance? We'll see.

Was Joe Wilson right calling the President a "liar" over illegal aliens will be covered? Yes he was. That is, illegal aliens will most certainly be covered under this plan. That wasn't the only set of lies. There were many. And, surprise! The AP has a list.

So, the blogger round-table and I talk about all this and what it means. Will health care legislation pass? Prediction: Yes, but it will not be a law that anyone will likes and will make everything worse.

  • Isn't this just like good Republicrats.

Let's just debate away what would happen with this or that in some government healthcare reform thingamajig ... ***YAWN***

At what point do we actually get to debate the fundamental question of the legality of such things? There is NO CONSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY for the United States government to be doing ANY of this, and that includes the stuff they're ALREADY DOING!

People, until you guys wake up and start applying the Constitution to these matters, things are only going to continue to get worse.

Please wake up, and do it now. The life you save may be your own.

  • I meant to say "Private insurers could ask about status. Government insurance cannot." As far as I know, insurance companies don't ask about legal staus, though they have to ask about state of residence because Federal law prohibits cross-state competition among insurance companies.
  • I'm not sure what you mean, Cav. I have filled out insurance applications before and they ask about status.

Or are you referring to the ERs?

Private insurance companies ask about status. Government insurance cannot. ERs cannot. Police cannot. Government health care means health care for illegals, because it is not legal for a government employee to ask someone his legal status without already having proof the person is here illegally -- and even then, most people wouldn't ask because they don't want to be called racists. Net effect: taxpayer-funded health care for illegals. Want proof? Hussein keeps using the 40-something million figure, which includes illegal immigrants.

I'm all for that, martin. I have been talking about that for years.

"I'm not sure what you mean, Cav. I have filled out insurance applications before and they ask about status."
If you're talking about private insurance, Vega, insurors have the right to ask about an applicant's residency, but not about their citizenship. Especially an employer- or union-based plan which has to comply with ERISA. Citizenship is not a disqualifier for health insurance - living outside of the plan's service area is.
The reason is that under current insurance laws, insurors are licensed and regulated by the states, and virtually every state stipulates that the insurors can only provide contracts to people who live in, or work in their service area. They have to be able to assess that the person who's applying for coverage works or resides within their service area. Those who live in New Jersey can be covered, if they work in New York, but the employer would have to make other arrangements if they hired someone to work out of their house in New Jersey - at the very least, they'd have to buy a policy on that person from a New Jersey regulated insurance carrier.
Those of us on the conservative side would like to see those artificial state boundaries removed and allow insurors to develop risk pools which are regional or national in nature. Imagine, if you will, having your health insurance rates based not on the risk offered by those in the Greater New York MSA, or even all your carrier's covered lives in the state of New York, but on all the people covered by your carrier from Maine to Pennsylvania. I'm sure that your rates would come down appreciably if that were to happen.

  • The latest Senate version specifically excludes illegals.

Sure... but it's illegal to ask someone's legal status. Fail.

No, he wasn't. The latest Senate version specifically excludes illegals.

The House version, as your links cites, doesn't bar illegals from participating in the exchange. But the exchange is not the public option. The exchange is all insurance companies. Just like illegals aren't barred from private insurance now.

Joe Wilson is the liar here.
  • If you haven't yet seen it, this CNN poll crows about a "Double-digit post-speech jump for Obama plan."

    http://shrinkurl.com/b5dc4

Scroll down to the very end to see "The sample of speech-watchers in this poll was 45 percent Democratic and 18 percent Republican." Ha! If they have to massage the numbers that badly, Obamacare is doomed!
