It’s About The Courts, Not Public Opinion For Supporters Of Gay Marriage

Many people have wondered why liberals get furious at conservatives for believing marriage should be between a man and a woman, when they don’t get angry at Barack Obama, who claims to believe the same thing.

There’s a simple reason for that: Liberals believe he’s lying.

Incidentally, they’re right.

The Obama administration announced Wednesday that it had withdrawn its legal support for the federal Defense of Marriage Act, stating that the law is unconstitutional and therefore the administration is under no obligation to defend it.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said in a statement released Wednesday that President Obama has decided that his administration will cease its defense of DOMA’s Section 3, which defines marriage for federal purposes as a legal union between one man and one woman.

Here’s the key thing to understand, folks: What gay marriage supporters really want is for the tyrants in black robes on the Supreme Court to ignore the Constitution and impose gay marriage on the whole country.

That’s why a Federal Marriage Amendment is so important — not because people who believe in traditional American values and traditional marriage insist on forcing our views on the entire country, but because the proponents of gay marriage have absolutely no intention of leaving the issue to the states.

Let me just add: If you want to guarantee that the issue is left to the states, there’s a way to do it. An Amendment to the Constitution suggested by Orrin Hatch would do exactly that,

Civil marriage shall be defined in each state by the legislature or the citizens thereof. Nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to require that marriage or its benefits be extended to any union other than that of a man and a woman.

It’s a sad statement about the times that we live in that we need an Amendment like that to clarify the plain and simple meaning of the Constitution, but apparently we do. Show me someone who doesn’t support that Amendment and I’ll show you someone who’s in favor of gay marriage and who wants the courts to implement it.
