Shocking Video Shows Sea Lion Grabbing Little Girl And Pulling Her Underwater

In Vancouver, there are adorable sea lions. They swim around the pier and are hungry. Sometimes people feed them bread crumbs. But sometimes the sea lion is hungry for more. At Steveston Fisherman Wharf in Richmond, B.C., a bystander, college student Michael Fujiwara, caught on video the horrifying moment a sea lion went from eating a piece of bread to grabbing a little girl off the dock and into the water.

Fujiwara said, “The sea lion actually attracted a lot of attention from the visitors there, including the young girl. She and her family, I guess, they came, they started feeding the animal bread crumbs or whatever it was, and then I guess the animal got a little too comfortable.”

A family member instantly dove into the water and rescued her, but she was visibly frightened and quickly left the area with her family.

Sea lions, like so many other animals, look cute and harmless. But they are not. This male sea lion was extremely large and it is a very good thing this girl had a quick thinking rescuer, or the sea lion might have been able to seriously injure the girl. As it is, this youngster will probably have nightmares for years. It’s up to adults to be sure children are far from the danger zone when it comes to interacting with wild animals in their environments.

Wildlife is not to be approached in a careless manner. Carelessness could cost a life. Wildlife is beautiful, but should be observed from a safe distance. This sea lion will hopefully stay far away and not try to grab anyone else. Thankfully everyone is safe. Next time, don’t feed the lions! Or they may try to feed on you.

See video below. And then, let’s not try this at home!
