Allegations of assault in the Wisconsin Supreme Court, or: another story out of Wisconsin that could suck up my entire weekend if I (or my wife) would let it:

Holy crap. Here I am, trying to enjoy a nice weekend when the sun is shining and my kids are home and there’s very little on our family calendar, when I suddenly notice this:

Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser allegedly grabbed fellow Justice Ann Walsh Bradley around the neck in an argument in her chambers last week, according to at least three knowledgeable sources.

That paragraph continues:

But other sources have offered a conflicting account, and Prosser on Saturday declared that the claims, once investigated, will be “proven false.”

In case you don’t know, Prosser is the Supreme Court Justice who just won re-election, after Wisconsin’s pro-unionista Left tried to make him a referendum on Governor Walker’s collective bargaining bill. So he’s a little bit of a focal point for Lefty anger right now.

Althouse is all over this story, by the way, here and here and here.

Instant reaction: obvious. Lots of Lefty demands that Prosser resign or be removed (check Althouse for links) and, hey, I can relate. If Prosser physically attacked another justice, he should step down.

But:

another source told the Journal Sentinel that Bradley attacked Prosser. “She charged him with fists raised,” the source said. Prosser “put his hands in a defensive posture,” the source said. “He blocked her.” In doing so, the source said, he made contact with Bradley’s neck.

Another source said the justices were arguing… [and] Prosser said he”d lost all confidence in [Abrahamson’s] leadership. Bradley then came across the room “with fists up,” the source said. Prosser put up his hands to push her back. Bradley then said she had been choked, according to the source. Another justice – the source wouldn’t say who – responded, “You were not choked.”

If Bradley physically attacked another Justice and then lied about it to the press, she should step down.

It’s no skin off me either way, really. If any Justice steps down, Governor Walker gets to nominate a new one. So go right ahead.

Lots more at Memeorandum, natch. Also Legal Insurrection, where William Jacobson notes:

It has been over a week since the incident, and while reports indicate the chief of the Capitol Police was notified by someone, that is a far cry from pressing charges.

If Bradley has not pressed charges, why not? Inquiring minds want to know.

Word.
