Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Good-bye Air America!

Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Good-bye Air America!

After the Scott Brown win, the Supreme Court taking a bite out of McCain-Feingold, and Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that the Dems can’t get the Senate bill through “as is,” you might have thought it couldn’t get any better for conservatives this week. If so, oh how wrong you were:

In the latest of a series of real and symbolic blows to the American left, Air America Radio, launched as the liberal answer to conservative talk radio, has announced that it will cease operations this week and declare bankruptcy.

“Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business,” wrote the company’s chairman, Charlie Kireker, in a memo to staff, forwarded to reporters by a spokeswoman for the radio network.

Why, yes, I will be Snoopy dancing all over their graves.

When Air America debuted, the line from the Left was that America was clamoring for left-wing talk radio, but the corporate fatcats were keeping them off the air.

Yet, despite having an all star liberal line-up, enormous financial resources, and receiving tens of millions of dollars worth of free publicity from their pals in the mainstream media, Air America was a failure from the get-go. It never had great ratings — perhaps because the left believed their own hype about how the right did well on the radio by being angry jackasses. Of course, given that most successful liberal bloggers do tend to be angry jackasses, maybe Air America’s hosts were just doing what came naturally.

In any case, Air America was always more of a left-wing political venture than a commercial enterprise and ultimately, it failed because the marketplace wasn’t interested in what they were peddling. Serves ’em right.

It also proves us right. Conservatives said there was no need for a fairness doctrine to balance out talk radio because the problem was that people didn’t want to hear liberal talk radio, not that liberals were locked off air. Once again, we were right and they were wrong.
