Barack Obama talked about defeating ISIS during his administration. But he never really meant it. In fact, he kept the military from squashing them at every available turn. That all changed when Donald Trump became President. In less than a year since Trump took office, Iraq has been liberated and has declared victory over ISIS. Jihadists are fleeing our military and Mattis is hunting their leaders down and stomping on them like the ungodly cockroaches they are. Good times.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has announced an end to the war against ISIS. The terrorist group and their Caliphate once controlled two-thirds of Iraq. Now they control less than 5 percent and their power is dwindling with each passing day. “This victory was achieved . . . when Iraqis united to face a heinous enemy that didn’t want us to see this day,” Abadi said at a press conference yesterday. “They wanted to return us back to the Dark Ages.” And they failed… good.
Victory was proclaimed since the “rugged, sparsely populated desert region bordering Syria has been ‘cleansed’ of Islamic State fighters and that the porous border that had underpinned the self-declared Caliphate that straddled both countries has been fully secured.” And all it took was a serious American military coupled with our Iraqi partners to pull it off. No thanks to Obama. The turning point in the battle for control of Iraq happened last July in a nine-month fight for Mosul. It’s an ancient city that has been devastated by ISIS and by the battle to reclaim it. It was the last big stronghold of ISIS in Iraq.
ISIS did not go away entirely though. They were still very dangerous and there were pockets of resistance still in Iraq. Those seem to have been eradicated now. Good riddance. Last month, the battle against ISIS in Syria was declared over by Russia and Syria as well. Since I believe that Russia was using them as a proxy, that does not surprise me. They want to look like they are as strong as the US military here. It’s all optics with the Russians and Iranians.

The US-led coalition tweeted their congratulations to the Iraqis using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group. “The Coalition congratulate the people of Iraq on their significant victory against Daesh (the Islamic State group). We stand by them as they set the conditions for a secure and prosperous #futureiraq.”
“Our nations’ dedication to defeating the terrorist enemy is evident in the progress we have made since our last gathering here … 95 percent of the territory once held by ISIS is now liberated, and our partners continue to secure more each day,” Mattis said. ““Mosul, Tal Afar and Hawijah have been liberated; efforts to liberate the final pockets of ISIS-held territory in Anbar province are progressing rapidly.”
The difference in just a short year between Iraq during Obama’s presidency and now under President Trump is stark. No more JV team and no more Obama. ISIS is gone at long last. This is what victory feels like… it’s been a long time since we’ve seen it.
