“Iran Holds Enough Uranium For Bomb.” Obama? Hello, Obama!

There was a time, say 4-5 months ago, when this would have been a pretty big story.

Iran has built up a stockpile of enough enriched uranium for one nuclear bomb, United Nations officials acknowledged on Thursday.

In a development that comes as the Obama administration is drawing up its policy on negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear programme, UN officials said Iran had produced more nuclear material than previously thought.

They said Iran had accumulated more than one tonne of low enriched uranium hexafluoride at a facility in Natanz.

If such a quantity were further enriched it could produce more than 20kg of fissile material – enough for a bomb.

“It appears that Iran has walked right up to the threshold of having enough low enriched uranium to provide enough raw material for a single bomb,” said Peter Zimmerman, a former chief scientist of the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency

The new figures come in a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, released on Thursday. This revealed that Iran’s production of low enriched uranium had previously been underestimated.

…A senior UN official added that countries usually waited until they had an enriched uranium stockpile sufficient for several bombs before proceeding to develop fissile material. He conceded that Iran now had enough enriched uranium for one bomb.

“Do they have enough low enriched uranium to produce a significant quantity [enough high enriched uranium for a bomb]?” he said. “In theory this is possible, [although] with the present configuration at Natanz it isn’t.”

David Albright, the head of the Institute for Science and International Security, said: “If Iran did decide to build nuclear weapons, it’s entering an era in which it could do so quickly.”

You mean a UN agency made a cataclysmic error that could lead to Iran getting a nuclear weapon? You don’t say. Those guys are usually so honest, competent, and efficient. An error like this is really out of character for them. Next thing you know, we’ll hear that they’re anti-Semitic, corrupt, and letting the Palestinians and Hezbollah launch attacks right in front of them. Ah, who am I kidding, that’s just too crazy to believe, right?

But, on to Commander Chickenhawk, our new Commander-In-Chief. During the campaign, he said many times that we would do whatever it took to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. From September of last year,

Democratic candidate Obama promised to examine every option, “including military, to prevent them from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” while his Republican rival McCain spoke about the possibility of a preemptive war against Iran.

…Obama was asked whether a nuclear-armed Iran was a direct threat to the US. His answer was direct and clear: “Yes. I think that a nuclear armed Iran is not just a threat to us, it’s a threat to Israel. And it is a game changer in the region. It’s unacceptable. And that’s why I’ve said that I won’t take any options off the table, including military, to prevent them from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Well, as we now know,

“It appears that Iran has walked right up to the threshold of having enough low enriched uranium to provide enough raw material for a single bomb.”

So, now what, Obama?

Also, you notice how little attention this is getting? Know why? Because there are so many disasters going on, many of them created by Obama and the Democrats, that people are having trouble keeping up with it all.

We have a recession, a trillion dollars in stimulus debt, welfare is back, we’re talking bank nationalization, Pakistan is capitulating to the Taliban, the war in Afghanistan is in deep trouble, we have corruption scandals in Congress, Obama’s admin doesn’t pay taxes, Obama’s wants to reward people for not paying their mortgages, etc., etc., etc. — and people are having trouble processing it all. Put another way, Obama is already in so far over his head, he’s having trouble figuring out which way the surface is at this point.

Still, he’s the President and he needs to give people a better idea of how he’s going to handle this situation. Is Obama going to make it clear he will do what it takes to keep Iran from setting off a Middle-East-wide arms race or is this just going to be another one of his broken campaign promises? Time’s a wasting. Tick tock, Mr. President, tick tock.
