Q&A Friday #102: Is The “Deadliest Warrior” the coolest concept for a television show ever?!

Question: “Is The “Deadliest Warrior” the coolest concept for a television show ever?!” — Good_Ol_Boy

Answer: I watched all the episodes from the first season of the Deadliest Warrior and I liked the show a lot. For those of you who haven’t seen it, the show pits different warriors from different eras against each other. Then they measure the results with a computer program and determine who the “greatest warrior” was in each situation (I was going to show you some sample videos, but Viacom seems to have filed copyright claims against the clips I liked that were up on YouTube).

Although the show was very entertaining, it did have some limitations.

For example, I thought they did a poor job of taking a shield into account against ranged weapons. Additionally, it’s very difficult to properly judge skill levels. For example, how can you treat an Apache, who was a part time warrior, as if he had the skill level of a gladiator, who trained to fight for living? Furthermore, they typically tested four sets of weapons for each warrior, which was probably a good idea on the show biz side. It allowed people to see lots of cool weapons from different eras, but the reality is, most people aren’t going to be using all those weapons in battle.

Last but not least, I think the biggest problem they’re going to have is that they’ve already worked their way through all the coolest warriors from history in their first season. They’ve already covered Spartans, Ninjas, Samurais, Shaolin Monks, Vikings, etc., etc..

At this point, there’s not a lot of new ground left to cover. Six Athenian Hoplites vs. one Navy Seal, maybe? How about Hitler vs. Patton in a battle to the death (Don’t laugh too hard. They did William Wallace vs. Shaka Zulu & Spetsnaz vs. Green Berets).

All in all, given the limitations they had, I think it was a really entertaining show — and I have to admit, I would love to spend an afternoon smashing those realistic gel representations of human bodies with different weapons. That would be a blast!
