The RightRoots Reaction To Steny Hoyer & Nancy Pelosi’s “Un-American” Comment

Surprisingly, Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi have doubled down on their strategy of demonizing ordinary Americans who have shown up at Townhalls to speak to their representatives about health care. Trashing American voters who have the audacity to disagree with their lords and masters in Congress doesn’t seem to me to be a winning political strategy, but it is true to what liberals really think: they believe the average American is stupid and needs “geniuses” like Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi to take care of them if they’re going to survive. Hence this paragraph from a column in USA Today,

However, it is now evident that an ugly campaign is underway not merely to misrepresent the health insurance reform legislation, but to disrupt public meetings and prevent members of Congress and constituents from conducting a civil dialogue. These tactics have included hanging in effigy one Democratic member of Congress in Maryland and protesters holding a sign displaying a tombstone with the name of another congressman in Texas, where protesters also shouted “Just say no!” drowning out those who wanted to hold a substantive discussion.

Let the facts be heard

These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades.

Translation: Sit down, shut up, and do what Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama tell you or you’re un-American.

Have Pelosi and Hoyer ever considered that people might be so angry because they’re being ignored, demonized, and lied to on a daily basis by radicals in Washington who are playing extremely dangerous games with people’s very lives and 1/6 of the US economy?

While I did say that I was surprised that Pelosi and Hoyer wrote this vile column, I was not surprised at the reaction to it by the Rightroots. Read and enjoy — I certainly did:

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) have their editorial posted this morning as Drudge promised. Pelosi and Hoyer lambasted grassroots protests at town hall health care meetings as “un-American.” If one were capable of feeding a monster on hypocrisy, this editorial would satiate the beast from Cloverfield.

…I think what annoys me the most about this progressive Congress and President is the fact that they are quite supportive of fake grassroots (astroturf) efforts from groups they have organized and supported both vocally and financially (ACORN,, ANSWER, Code Pink), but they then turn around and lash out at real grassroots efforts of self-organized local citizens that came together via blogs and Facebook pages.

The simple face of the matter is that the progressives do not want dissent. They want obedience. As the President himself said last week, opponents of his plan should shut up so that he can pass the legislation he wants. — Confederate Yankee

Remember, dissent is the highest form of democracy. Unless you’re a non-progressive/liberal/Democrat, of course. Then it’s un-American.

Why? Because…

That’s different! — Dennis the Peasant

Pelosi’s use of the loaded word “unAmerican” reveals that Democrats are fully prepared to double down on their own harsh and divisive rhetoric and attack average Americans who feel their concerns regarding health care reform are being ignored. With polls running strongly against the Democrat’s plan that puts them at odds with more and more Americans every day. — Flopping Aces

So this is what it comes to. After eight years of protesters hanging George Bush in effigy, calling him a Nazi, disrupting conservative speeches on campuses by taking over stages or throwing pies, creating websites and movies that wished for Bush’s death, and a myriad of other indignities…. After all this time, Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer discover what it means to be “Un-American.” — Legal Insurrection

It is one thing to plead for civil debate and ask the rhetoric be toned down. That would most likely find some sympathetic ears out there and perhaps even agreement from some on the other side . Instead, apparently completely clueless to building sentiment against the legislation in question, Pelosi and Hoyer decide on the “enemy” approach. Characterize good Americans who are tired of being lied too as “un-American” when they approach their representative with questions and get a little steamed when he or she avoid answering them or pops off with talking points which everyone knows are a bunch of crap.

Yup, that makes them “un-American”. They’re un-American for demanding answers from slippery pols who seem to have their minds made up about the legislation and were hoping to hold pro-forma townhalls stuffed with friendly faces to validate their position. They’re un-American for disrupting what are supposed to be “shut up and listen” sessions instead of open forums in which constituents ask questions and receive answers to them. They’re un-American for coming out and demanding their representatives actually represent them and not their party. — QandO

Only Obama can tell people to shut up. And if you don’t do it, or worse, say shut up to the mostly lying opposition in return, then maybe we should build a camp for people like you. Man, this idiot can’t leave office soon enough. And some of his useless, useful idiots like Hoyer and Pelosi need to mount the bus out of town with him, provided he hasn’t tossed them under it first earlier in the route. — Riehl World View

It’s come to this: the official position of the leadership of the House Democrats is that vocal, public opposition to whatever they want to do is “un-American”.

This burns me. It’s not enough that Pelosi and Hoyer are lying through their teeth about what their health care scheme will do, once they finally figure out what the bill will contain, but they want you to sit down and shut up while they do whatever they want. — The Sundries Shack

And if some of the town hall protests have gotten angry, it is because Pelosi, Hoyer, and the other Democrats in congress are frustrating us because they simply are not listening.

It is precisely people like Pelosi and Hoyer that cause the American People to mis-trust Congress. — Yid With Lid
