Tonight, long after most of us have drifted off into a contented slumber, dreaming wondrous dreams, there will be people laying awake. People like Bob Shrum, Mary Beth Cahill, and even John Kerry himself will be looking up at the ceiling, drenched in their own nervous sweat, wondering if this is what it feels like to watch a campaign slip away into the ether.
What could produce such a reaction? Numbers my friends, very, very, bad numbers for the Kerry campaign. Despite the insurgency in Iraq, despite the 9/11 hearings, despite massive numbers of negative ads attacking Bush, despite it all, Bush is getting stronger while Kerry is hemmoraging support because of Bush’s negative ads….
