Q&A Friday #74: Why Don’t You Like McCain And Romney

Question: “I’ve been a reader of this blog for a few years now, and I typically think you have a clear-headed view of things. However, you seem to have a rather biased view against Mitt Romney and John McCain.

Why do you have such a hostile view of Romney? I’m not asking this as a Romney supporter, but simply as someone who feels that your coverage of Mitt seems overly/unjustly negative.

Also, why do you dislike John McCain, when he would obviously be preferable to, say, Hillary.” — Deuce

Answer: I’m a conservative and my goal is to get the candidate in the White House who best moves an agenda I support forward.

Who my favorite candidate is, as I have often said before, is my former employer, Duncan Hunter.

But, if it can’t be Duncan, I like Fred Thompson because I think he’s the most conservative of the top tier candidates and he’s electable.

As to the other top tier candidates and Huckabee, who is probably at tier 1.5…

Rudy isn’t conservative. Yes, I would strongly prefer him to a Democratic candidate, but it’s hard for me to get enthusiastic about the idea of President Rudy Giuliani.

Mitt Romney is a slick guy and my gut impression is that he will say whatever he thinks it will take to get elected. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he’s Arlen Specter or anything, but it’s hard for me to be confident that what he is saying today is what he would do if he got in the White House. Perhaps more importantly, I’m starting to become convinced that he’s unelectable. If he can’t win a general election, it really doesn’t matter how conservative he is or isn’t.

As to John McCain, he seems to be a man with no ideological underpinnings, a man who’s absolutely convinced that everything he believes is right, just because he believes it. Moreover, he seems to take special delight in sticking it to conservatives on issues we care a great deal about — for the amusement of the mainstream media. In my opinion, he has terrible judgment and a McCain presidency would be every bit as frustrating for conservatives as the Bush presidency has been, if not moreso. Would I rather have McCain than Hillary? You bet — but, on the whole, I think he has been bad for the Republican Party and the country; so I sure don’t think he deserves a promotion.

Mike Huckabee doesn’t strike me as being extremely conservative once you get beyond the social issues, but I do think he’s electable and probably preferable to McCain or Romney as a candidate.
