The Separation Of Church And

The Separation Of Church And State: The first amendment says in part “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

Many left-wingers and atheists, because of their hostility to religion, have attempted to use this part of Constitution to assault people who don’t share their beliefs. What the Founding Fathers were referring to here was the establishment of a theocracy like Iran or the establishment of an official government church (ex: the Church of England). To interpret this part of the Constitution as some sort of prohibition against mentioning the word God in the Pledge, prohibiting Christian groups from using public school facilities after hours, to mean Christmas carols are not allowed, etc., is intellectually dishonest. In fact, the Constitution itself in Article 7 uses the phrase “year of our Lord” which should in and of itself prove that the San Francisco courts recent ruling on the Pledge is ridiculous. Unfortunately, we have too many people in our society who interpret “separation of church and state” to mean that the government has to be anti-religion. That is not the case and was never the intention of the Founding Fathers.
