Know Why Obama Stammers? Cause He’s So Frikkin’ Brilliant!

No, really! So says The LA Times’ Meghan Daum

Apparently, a lot of people consider President Obama to be bumblingly inarticulate. “The guy can’t talk his way out of a paper bag!” a reader wrote to me recently. “Sarah Palin is a brilliant speaker. It’s the president whose sentences are undiagrammable,” said another in response to a column I wrote about Palin. It’s not just my readers, nor is it exclusively conservatives, who hold this view. A Google search of “does Obama have a speech impediment” turns up several pages of discussion among the president’s supporters and critics alike.Admittedly, the president is given to a lot of pauses, “uhs” and sputtering starts to his sentences. As polished as he often is before large crowds (where the adjective “soaring” is often applied to his speeches), his impromptu speaking frequently calls to mind a doctoral candidate delivering a wobbly dissertation defense.

But consider this: It’s not that Obama can’t speak clearly. It’s that he employs the intellectual stammer. Not to be confused with a stutter, which the president decidedly does not have, the intellectual stammer signals a brain that is moving so fast that the mouth can’t keep up. The stammer is commonly found among university professors, characters in Woody Allen movies and public thinkers of the sort that might appear on C-SPAN but not CNN. If you’re a member or a fan of that subset, chances are the president’s stammer doesn’t bother you; in fact, you might even love him for it (he sounds just like your grad school roommate, especially when he drank too much Scotch and attempted to expound on the Hegelian dialectic!).

See! It’s so easy. He’s so super-duper awesomely mega-brilliant that he can’t actualize an coherent sentence. Yeah, that’s it. That’s the ticket.

Obviously, Meghan Daum is not nearly as smart as she thinks sje is if she believes that Obama is too smart for mere mortal words. Excuse me for saying so, but what a load of pseudo-intellectual twaddle that is, Ms. Daum.

Stammering (as differentiated from stuttering) is most frequently associated with poor impulse control. It’s usually found in people who impulsively begin speaking before they’ve composed what they’re trying to say. The stammerer often has to backtrack as he re-formulates the way he was going to express his thought, resulting in a hesitating, stop-start speaking style. And it happens with people of all intellectual levels, not just university profs, Woody Allen characters or “deep thinkers”. I know you’re trying flatter Mr. Obama with your comparisons, but it’s untruthful to imply that stammering is the sole province of the intellectual elite.

Stammerers don’t usually have the same expressive difficulty when reading prepared text, reciting memorised passages (like the Pledge of Allegiance or religious credos), or singing. Most stammering is at least somewhat situational and is exacerbated by stress

As to your formulation that it’s the sign of a brain moving faster than speech, that’s just laughable. Even the dullest among us think much faster than their mouths could possibly enunciate the words. This is because thinking is an electrochemical process and speaking a mechanical one. I did some tachistoscopic studies on perception in graduate school which supported the observation that most people formulate an understanding of a complex picture which they can they describe in about 500 milliseconds.

Interesting, thanks for that. I too occasionally stammer, usually if I’m just ‘shooting the breeze’ with somebody. When I speak to a customer, I don’t exactly have a script, but more like preset responses to turn to, so that I rarely stammer when speaking to them.

President Obama stammers because he is not intellectual, just very well coached in various pointy headed academic topics. There is a very simple reason Obama speaks the way he does without the prepared speech. He is a professor, most professors know the subject and do not prepare for a speech, they also have almost absolutely infallible presence in classroom. Discussion can always be backtracked, and almost never recorded. Obama must chose his words very careful for two reasons, one of which you would not like. 1. he is self conscious about his speaking, so he choses his words carefully.2. he is frankly trying to not go over the heads of majority people. and its not an insult to the intelligence of the average Joe, but the reality. I personally know people that had Obama as a professor at University of Chicago. The man is highly intelligent. There is no question about that. He might not be the best or one of the best speakers that White House have seen, but an ability to speak well to a large audience does not secure intelligence. And neither is the stammering – one way or another. Content is much more important, ability to make a point.
