Is Rick Perry Dumb, Or Misunderestimated?
Written By : William Teach

That’s the question that The Politico’s Jonathan Martin asks in a long (5 web pages), top page story about Perry, with the catchy title “Is Ricky Perry Dumb?” We’re still waiting for his other pieces “Is Maxine Waters Insane?” and “Is Obama a complete failure?” Also “How do we know Obama’s brilliant when we’ve never seen any school transcripts or papers?” I hear he’s planning on releasing his article “Why does everything the Smartest Man In The World™ touches turn to poop?” very soon. Of course, those others are based on reality, rather than a liberal attack job on a guy who is leading the GOP primary field

Another Texas governor who drops his “g’s” and scorns elites is running for president and the whispers are the same: Lightweight, incurious, instinctual.

Strip away the euphemisms, and Rick Perry is confronting an unavoidable question: is he dumb – or just misunderestimated?

Either way, the article is going to attempt to paint Perry as dumb and worthless

Doubts about Perry’s intellect have hounded him since he was first elected as a state legislator nearly three decades ago. In Austin, he’s been derided as a right-place, right-time pol who looks the part but isn’t so deep – “Gov. Goodhair.” Now, with the chatter picking back up among his enemies and taking flight in elite Republican circles, the rap threatens to follow him to the national stage.

“He’s like Bush only without the brains,” cracked one former Republican governor who knows Perry, repeating a joke that has made the rounds.

So, we’re through the first 4 paragraphs, and everything, including the anonymous “former Republican governor”, attempts to put him in a negative light.

But conversations with both Perry admirers and critics reveal a more complicated assessment about the mind of a politician who has never lost an election—and ranks as the longest-serving governor in Texas history.

The majority of the story is negative, rather than a “complicated assessment.”

He is not an ideas man. Perry hasn’t spent his political career marking up the latest Cato or Heritage white papers or reading policy-heavy books late into the night. Advisers and colleagues have informed much of his thinking over the years.

Look, I’m not a real big Perry supporter: in practice, versus what he says, he seems to me to be another Big Government social conservative with some fiscal conservative leanings. But, there’s no doubt that he Gets Things Done. And his state seems to be doing a whole hell of a lot better than Democrat run states like, say, California, which sees its businesses streaming into Texas. Perry is, in fact, a leader, someone who knows how to get things that work in the real word done around him. And, we don’t necessarily need “idea men”: we need leaders who solicit the ideas from the professionals, then makes it happen, and generally convinces people that this is the best thing to do.

Then follows some back and forth about Perry, till we get to this on page 3

Those who remember Perry from his days as a conservative Democrat in the state House say he was likable and ambitious – but not considered a thinker.

“He was not known as a particularly bright guy,” recalled Democratic strategist Paul Begala, who worked in Austin at the time. “But he was really charming and clearly a political talent.”

And what has that “bright guy” in the position of President done? He lives in his own academic world, surrounds himself with other academics, and thinks that doing the same thing again and again will achieve different results.

Then more back and forth, ending with

The mistake, said Johnson, is to infer weakness from Perry’s style.

“The political graveyard in Texas is buried full of people who have underestimated Rick Perry,” he said. “We had a U.S. senator who did that and she didn’t even make the run-off. Sooner or later they’re going to figure out that he’s not just lucky, he’s good.”

Of course, most people aren’t going to make it that far in a web article. And, no matter what, Democrats will paint Perry as dumb, crazy, anti-intellectual, pick your favorite personal smear from Democrats. What else can they do, though, considering the mess Obama has made?

The media kind of lost credibility on assessing intelligence after they declared Obama was the smartest person who ever lived.

I wonder if they will attack Perry for being inexperienced?

No just dumb and misunderestimated as Teach suggests.

If the people claiming he’s an idiot were the same who declared Obama a genius then I will take their assessment of intelligence with a grain of salt*.

Further, that fact that Obama could be smarter than most politicians shouldn’t be hard to believe, especially given the abilities of the GOP field.

So… since you seem to believe that President Bush’s “borrowing from the Chinese” makes him a failure and you claim that you do not believe Obama’s borrowing even more than Bush is a good thing (never mind his having escalated Afghanistan and starting a “Kinetic Military Action” in Libya) that must make Obama

Too modest to show us that he got a miraculous 8.0 GPA (somehow)?

Or perhaps that MCL isn’t quite as prestigious as you believe?

/and Harvard is notorious for grade inflation.  Scary to think he’s embarrassed for us to see his grades even after they’ve been inflated by an average of 1 full grade point (increase in average GPA from 1950 to 2010 is 2.5 to 3.5).

//at least we know he can read (otherwise he wouldn’t be able to even introduce himself in a speech).  So that’s something.

LOL. I had this exact same discussion with my left-leaning brother-in-law yesterday at a family cookout. Its amazing to see how the liberal borg-mind has turned its followers into a bunch of parrots squawking the same vacuous lines and talking points ad nauseum: he’s another Bush, he delegates too much, he’s too religious, his hair, etc… My bro-n-law became somewhat flustered when I refused to let the conversation drift away from economic issues.
If Gov. Perry does indeed win the nomination, his campaign needs to ignore all other distractions and focus entirely upon the economy.

I agree, that’s the GOP target: the economy.  When someone brings up something else, point it at the economy.  When a “gotcha” question comes up, say something like “I think the American people are more worried about the economy.”

The problem with Perry isn’t his intelligence. The problem is that he’ll say and do whatever the political winds suggests he say and do. Ask any Texan.

We’ll see soon enough how Perry stacks up against Obama when they debate. Perry has already won the nomination…unless he finds himself caught in a monumental corruption scandal…which isn’t out of the question.

It’s all a shame because we on the Left were so looking forward to seeing Bachmann nominated and then just letting her talk. The good new is we will have a few more GOP debates to sit back and watch Bachmann perform.

It’s a matter of understanding American politics. Perry is the perfect candidate for the time. Add to this, the lacking of the rest of the field. Add to this the polls. Add to this the history of Governors being nominated. Add to this the necessity of raising money and Perry’s ability to do this better than any other GOP candidate.

            It’s pretty clear.

That’ doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like someone else, like Bachmann, to be nominated.

That you think you understand American politics and can predict a candidate this early is the height of stupidity and arrogance. Your criteria while sensible are no guarantee nor are they proof positive. Both Romney and Huckabee were in the same place, as Perry, in ’08.

It’s no contest. Perry wins easily. He takes 1st or second in Iowa. He takes first in NH. He takes first in SC.

By this time, Romney’s campaign demonstrates that he can’t raise the money like he thought he could from the establishment because it’s going to Perry.

Meanwhile, Cain, Santorum, Huntsman, and Newt all drop out after NH, if not Iowa.

Bachmann gets enough of the Tea Party Money and votes to get her to  SC. She dies an ugly death there by getting no more than 10% of the vote.

This changes if Palin gets into the raise. That would mean the Palin campaign would die an ugly death in SC and Bachmann is out by NH.

You know, Democrats might get 15 points in an election because of media bias, but I think Republicans probably get a point by being consistently underestimated and at least a point from people who get sick of the candidate being attacked by elitist jerks on TV.
