Outrage Over 12 Year-Old Egyptian Boy’s Engagement To 11 Year-Old Cousin [VIDEO]
During his older brother’s nuptials in Egypt, a 12 year-old boy became officially engaged to his 11 year-old cousin. Omar and Gharam, who looks far older than her 11 years in these pictures, sparked a controversy as child marriage, though illegal in Egypt, still takes place far too often.
The 12 year-old’s father, Nasser Hassan, insisted there was nothing inappropriate since they were only engaged. Only engaged? For 7 years? Gharam will not be able to wed legally until she is 18, when Omar will be 19. What kind of childhood will they have as an engaged couple? Can they even wait that long, or will they marry earlier and deprive the young girl of educational opportunities and social contact? Will she start having babies when she is only a child herself?
Head of the Women’s Center for Legal Aid and Counseling, Reda Eldanbouki, made a government agency, the National Center for Childhood and Motherhood, aware of the issue. As well, he made sure to officially make a complaint to the attorney general in hopes the incident will be investigated and the parents held responsible.
Nasser Hassan asserted that ‘Omar has always loved Gharam so much that he used to say he will marry her when they grow up before any other man asks for her hand in marriage when she is older, they will get married when they reach the legal age.’
Really? Guess we will see about that. We’ll check back in 7 years. See video below on the statistics of child marriage in developing nations.
