Well, we’ve been saying California should do more to be like Texas…

…and seceding from the rest of California seems like a helluva start:

Is the state of California about to go “South”?

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone apparently thinks so, after proposing that the county lead a campaign for as many as 13 Southern California counties to secede from the state.

Stone said in a statement late Thursday that Riverside, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono counties should form the new state of South California.

The creation of the new state would allow officials to focus on securing borders, balancing budgets, improving schools and creating a vibrant economy, he said…

Stone said he would present his proposal to the Board of Supervisors July 12.

According to Ilya Somin, California would have to consent to splitting up before it could happen. Would they? Dunno. This guy Stone will have to give them good reason to go along with it. An offer they can’t refuse, so to speak. Or at least an overwhelmingly positive popular referendum.

What an interesting precedent that would set. Imagine the possibilities, if it worked. Southern Illinois splitting away from Chicago’s domination. Upstate New York doing the same. East Texas and West Texas? Nah, Texans are too proud of being Texans.

What about parts of states joining other states? Florida’s panhandle digging a trench and joining Georgia, for example? Or…

Y’know, in 1842, northern Illinois voted by a 2 to 1 margin to join Wisconsin, once Wisconsin became a state.

Maybe my dream of re-establishing the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 (Article 5) isn’t so far-fetched after all.
