The Most Loved And Hated Nation On Earth: It’s nice to see a story like this one once in a while to go along with the seemingly endless carping about America.
The Most Loved and Hated
The Most Loved and Hated Nation in the World: You know the United States is the most loved and hated country in the world. That shows up in so many ways. Earlier today, I was reading a post in a forum complaining about American movies because they were “propaganda” and because they showed too much reverence for the flag. The irony here is thicker than London fog. Here’s a non-American watching an American movie and then getting on the internet which was invented in America and then probably using an American operating system to complain about how rotten America is.
Of course we’ve been seeing this sort of thing for a long time but it’s been more noticeable since the ‘War on Terrorism’ started. Since 9/11 we’ve been treated to angry Pakistanis smashing windows in a KFC they were presumably buying buckets of chicken from the day before. Palestinians in American football jerseys were cheering in the streets when the planes hit the WTC. After the Taliban were gone I read a story about a Afghan who was really excited because he was going to be able to watch “Titanic” without fear of being arrested for the first time in years.
American culture is slowly but surely permeating the world like no other culture since the Roman empire. Considering the success and prosperity our culture has brought America in it’s short history, that’s a good thing.
