It’s no secret that the Keystone XL pipeline is, to put it lightly, contentious. Opinions on the pipeline, which would ostensibly bring oil from Canadian refineries, are divided mostly along party lines.
However, those lines get a whole lot muddier if we can’t even agree on what the pipeline is going to do.
President Obama, speaking to Fargo, North Dakota’s WDAY about his recent veto of a Keystone-approving bill, says that the oil delivered via the pipeline wouldn’t even be for American consumers:
“It bypasses the United States and is estimated to create a little over 250, maybe 300 permanent jobs,” Obama told the news station. “We should be focusing more broadly on American infrastructure for American jobs and American producers, and that’s something that we very much support.”
If the oil bypasses America, and creates merely 250 jobs, it truly would seem silly to risk environmental disaster by building it.
However, Obama’s claims may not be entirely truthful.
As a matter of fact, they have earned the coveted ‘four Pinnocchios’ from the Washington Post‘s Fact Checker:
“When the president says ‘it bypasses the United States,’ he leaves out a very important step. The crude oil would travel to the Gulf Coast, where it would be refined into products such as motor gasoline and diesel fuel.”
This refined product, known to the layman as, umm, gasoline, would then be consumed by, you guessed it, Americans. A recent report by IHS Energy concluded that as much as 70 percent of the finished product would end up in the hands, and engines, of Americans:
“Canadian crude making its way to the USGC [Gulf Coast] will likely be refined there, and most of the refined products are likely to be consumed in the United States.”
Now, it must be noted, IHS has been accused of being biased toward the oil industry in the past. In this case, however, its findings are in sync with a report released by our own State Department:
“As crude of foreign origin, Canadian crude is eligible for crude export license as long as it is not commingled with domestic crude. However, such an option appears unlikely to be economically justified for any significant durable trade given transport costs and market conditions.”
In other words, Obama’s words are some high grade political jiu-jitsu.
It’s one of those things that is true from a certain perspective, but not true in the way people actually comprehend words.
Kind of like you telling a girl you’re going with her to the prom. And then – after you stand her up and meet up at the after-prom – you’re all like, “oh, not as your date.”
The Keystone pipeline makes absolute economic sense. The shuffle Obama does on issues is sheer obfuscation and lies for a political agenda. It’s smoke and mirrors meant to deceive because he knows the truth would not be tolerated. And there are a lot of sheep willing to graze on whatever he offers as he shuts the gate on them. We need the oil and gas – America’s lifeblood and productivity depend on it. I only pray that Congress finds a way to get it to go through and soon.
