We Need More Sheepdogs and Less Virtue Signaling Sheep

No LGBT community – love will not conquer hate – not this time. No rainbow flags in the shape of hearts or cuddly teddy bears will protect you from gunfire or a suicide bomb when radical Islamists come-a-callin.

Oh, it’s a great liberal sentiment – just as it was after the Bataclan nightclub massacre in Paris in November.

In March, Michelle wrote a piece entitled, “Post-Jihad Gesture Theater: Je Suis Sick of It.” As is usual, she knocked it out of the park as she wrote: “While homicidal, suicidal and genocidal jihadists are busy plotting the next soft-target terror attacks on the West, docile Westerners are busy shedding cartoon tears and doodling broken hearts on social media.”

Now we’ve had another planned massacre, this time on an American “soft target,” on the heels of our last “soft target” attack in San Bernardino by Islamic radicals. And the response of the Je Suis crowd is the same as it was after the Charlie Hebdo, the Paris and Brussels attacks – candlelight – chalk drawings and “solidarity.”

After the San Bernardino attacks, thousands gathered at San Manuel Stadium to mourn in solidarity. “It could’ve been any of us, so I’ve had a really hard time with it and I just wanted to be around other people who felt the same,” Martha Rendon, a San Bernardino County employee said while holding back tears. “County, city and clergy leaders told the crowd to pray for the victims’ loved ones and to stand united as a community in what will be a long healing process.”

What does that even mean – “stand united as a community?” It means absolutely nothing. It’s just liberal feel-good fodder for the masses. There as just as many “soft targets” in San Bernardino county as there were before the attack – but we’re not allowed to consider that.

I’m not against a period of mourning and I feel for those who have lost loved ones and friends, but many of the people who show up with their fluffy teddy bear tributes do so just to be involved – to just say they were there – as if somehow this will help going forward.

How on Earth will homemade signs that read “Peace No War,” as were displayed in Brussels, or “Love Will Win,” with a rainbow heart added for emphasis, help with the fight against fundamentalist Islamists who are determined to keep finding “soft targets” to attack?

This answer is of course, they won’t, but that’s not what these shows of solidarity are really all about, are they.

Malkin reminded us of a piece authored by James Bartholomew in April of 2015 entitled, “The awful rise of ‘virtue signaling,” as if good intentions, being one with the victims and sloganeering will rule the day or prevent further attacks.

It is considered virtuous to merely stand in solidarity, waving a sign while standing next to someone equally as virtuous waving something similar. Bartholomew writes that in this way one doesn’t “actually have to do anything.” It has been the liberal mantra for years: “Symbolism over substance.” Actually doing something is hard and scary.

I’m reminded of a piece written by retired Army Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman, quoting a Vietnam veteran. “Then there are the wolves,” the old war veteran said, “and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy.” Do you believe there are wolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial. “Then there are sheepdogs,” he went on, “and I’m a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf.”

There were at least 300 people at The Pulse nightclub in Orlando – overwhelming men – and one shooter. Yes, he had a big, scary AR and a handgun. But among the 300 or so sheep, there were evidently no sheepdogs present. They’ve been taught to be sheep – to hide and wait for the “first responder” sheepdogs to come save them.

How many sheep may have been saved by the effort of just 5 or 6 sheepdogs putting themselves in harms way to save the flock, as they did on Flight 93, or the two U.S. Servicemen who helped subdue a gunman on a train in Europe.

Want to help stop terrorism? Put down your LOVE WILL WIN sign – remove yourself from the rest of the self-congratulatory solidarity seekers and seek out those who can help you become a “hard target.” And then take what you’ve learned and teach someone else.

We need more sheepdogs – more personal first responders and fewer virtue signaling sheep.
