Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott Says He Will Definitely Sign Open Carry Into Law

Well, this is long overdue. Texas Governor Greg Abbot will sign into law open carry – it will be the 45th state to do this. It should have been among the first. I view Texas as probably the freest state in the nation, so it is surprising that this took so long. In a state where cowboy boots and hats are the endless fashion and bar fights are a right of passage, you would think liberty would hold sway there on all topics. It is ironic that in the “Wild West” you cannot carry a six shooter on your hip and the further irony, for Texas in particular, are quirky laws that ban carry of a bowie knife or, in San Antonio, a locking pocket knife. With the rising violence from sanctioned invaders coming across their border as well, Texans need out in the open protection more than ever. Wearing your gun in the open is a strong deterrent. Even stronger when a group is wearing open carry.

From Western Journalism:

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) said during the State of the State Address earlier this week he would sign a bill legalizing open carry for Lone Star state residents, making it the 45th state to normalize the practice.

The recently inaugurated governor said he would sign a bill pending in the Texas State Senate. “Let me briefly follow up on a word I mentioned a moment ago — liberty,” Abbott said Tuesday.

In a single word, it encapsulates what this country stands for, what Texas symbolizes. I will expand liberty in Texas by signing a law that makes Texas the 45th state to allow open carry.

Last week, a state Senate committee voted along party lines to bring the bill, as well as a bill that would legalize the concealed carry of weapons on Texas college campuses, to the full Senate floor, The Dallas Morning News reported.

“We are talking about law-abiding citizens who want to exercise their rights,” said state Sen. Joan Huffman (R), a Houston Republican who chairs the committee that passed the bills. “It’s a matter of letting people, if they so choose, protect themselves in a legal way.”

The bills have the support of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a conservative Republican who was sworn in, along with Abbott, last month. “We are now one step closer to passing these two historic bills out of the Senate,” Patrick said in a statement approving of both bills.

Assuming Texas passes open carry, only California, the District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, New York, and South Carolina would be the remaining jurisdictions not to allow the practice, according to

Under the Constitution, we have the right to be armed and protect ourselves. This will make Texas an even safer state and allow Texans to further exercise their Constitutional rights. Hopefully, this will go through without a hitch and get signed into law. Only a very few states now don’t allow open carry. Among those are whom you would expect: DC, California, New York and Illinois. I would hope that Florida and South Carolina will rectify this issue in their states and soon. Texas steps forward once again and proclaims that you don’t mess with Texas – especially with armed Texans.
