Britain: ‘Burglar lunged at me with a knife, but I was arrested on suspicion of assaulting HIM’

Dad-of-four Brian Sharp spent seven hours in a cell and had the clothes on his back seized as evidence when a burglar suffered head injuries after leaving his property…in which he trespassed. You would think that the police involved would understand the situation, but no.

We live in an absolutely crazy, upside down land.

A homeowner has told how he was arrested and held in cells on suspicion of assaulting a knife-wielding burglar .

Brian Sharp, 40, was woken by his dog to find the 32-year-old thief stealing personal items from his home.

Sharp says the intruder got in through a window in his children’s bedroom

The dad-of-four claims the burglar grabbed a 9in steak knife from his kitchen before trying to slash his neck.

The man suffered head injuries after leaving Brian’s home and he was arrested the following morning.

The council binman spent around seven hours in the cells and had DNA swabs and urine samples taken.

Police also seized the clothes he was wearing – except for his underwear – and sent him home in a red ‘suicide suit’.

Brian said: “I asked the burglar to leave and said, ‘Get out of my house’.

“He replied by saying, “If you don’t get back in the front room, I’m going to stab you’.

“Then he lunged at me and the knife came just millimetres from my neck – if I hadn’t moved back he would have stabbed me.

“It’s worrying but I don’t know why I was arrested. The police didn’t give me any reason at all.

“It was all just questioning on ‘how he hurt himself’ and whether I was ‘defending myself’.

“I said to the cops, ‘You can do whatever you want to me’. They took swabs off my hands, they took urine, they basically checked me over.

“The police took all my clothes – literally everything except for my pants and socks.

“They tried to take my trainers off me but I managed to get them back.”

Brian says the intruder gained entry to his home in Basildon, Essex, through his children’s bedroom window.

Luckily the children, aged just six and eight, were not at home when the raid happened late on Friday night.

Brian confronted the burglar after being woken by Blue, his seven-year-old Staffordshire terrier.

The man was trying to steal a TV, iPad, mobile phone, and items including trainers, dirty pants and socks, teabags and cleaning products.

Brian says he followed the raider for around 30 metres before returning to his home and waiting for police.

The man was arrested a short time later and taken to hospital with head injuries and a fractured jaw.

He is still receiving treatment and said to be in a serious but non-life threatening condition.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating a burglary where a man was threatened with a knife.

“Officers would like to speak to anyone who has any further information about what has happened to the man was injured.”

The case has similarities to that of Tony Martin – who was jailed for shooting dead a teenage burglar at his home.

Were the police out of line here? You bet. Anyone who was the victim of any crime would be furious…even a cop would be, if this happened to him or her.
