BREAKING: SC Gov Nikki Haley Calls for Removal of Confederate Flag from War Memorial on Capitol Grounds

South Carolina’s Republican Governor, Nikki Haley, is now calling for the removal of the Confederate flag from the war memorial that sits on the grounds of the Capitol at Columbia.

The Governor made her announcement at 4PM Eastern Time.

Gov. Nikki Haley is throwing her support behind removing the Confederate flag from the State House grounds following a racially charged shooting in Charleston that killed nine African-Americans during a Bible study last week.

“It’s time to move the flag from the capitol grounds,” Haley said Monday afternoon in front of a room full of state leaders who applauded her when she made the announcement.

The governor said she would use her authority to call lawmakers back to Columbia if they do not take up debate during this session.

Haley becomes the highest-profile state leader to call for the flag’s removal after the shooting.

It should be remembered that the CS flag does not fly over the Capital building, that it was removed in the year 2000 by a Republican, but that it was first flown over the state capitol dome by Democrat governor Ernest “Fritz” Hollings in the days before the civil rights bill passed.
