At the same time that police officers all across the country have increasingly become a target for abuse, not to mention out right murder, the kindness that one Chicago police officer performed for a homeless man in the Windy City is going viral.

Chicago PD Sergeant, B. Hagarty was finishing up his lunch at a Chipotle burrito shop when he saw a homeless man digging in the garbage can outside the restaurant. Having no idea that anyone was watching, the Sgt. did something that few would expect and the story is now going viral.
The story was related by a Facebook user in Chicago named Rachel Mitchell. She witnessed the officer’s actions and took some photos of the event then posted it all to her Facebook page.
“So today I saw something that made my day. This Chicago Police officer was sitting at a window seat at Chipotle, outside the window he saw a homeless man digging through the trash. The cop knocked on the window, getting the homeless man’s attention. Through the glass he asked the man if he was hungry. The man nodded yes, and the cop motioned for him to come inside. The cop told him to set what belongings he had next to him and told him to order what he wanted because he would pay for it. They stood in line together and at the end the cop paid for the man’s meal. A simple hand shake was exchanged between them and they parted ways like it was no big deal. Touched my heart so much, with all the (crap) police are getting these days it reminds me there’s so much more good out there than anyone ever wants to give credit. If everyone did something simple like this every day the world would be a better place.”
Sgt. Hagarty was later asked by his commanders if he really did all that and he reluctantly admitted it saying that he didn’t want to make a big deal out of it all. It was just a thing he sometimes does, he said.
The officer, who is set to retire after 35 years, received a thanks from the city for his kindness.
