FBI: More Than 200 American Citizens Have Tried to or Succeeded in Joining ISIS

The FBI is now confirming that some 200 American citizens–many naturalized, but some natural born–have either tried to go to Syria or have succeeded in making it to Syria in order to join the terror group ISIS.

FBI Director James Comey made his comments at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on July 8.

“We continue to identify individuals who seek to join the ranks of foreign fighters … and also homegrown violent extremists who may aspire to attack the United States from within,” Comey told lawmakers on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

The radicalization of Americans by Islamic State is a top concern for the agency, and earlier on Wednesday Comey urged technology companies to allow law enforcement authorities access to encrypted communications to help combat the threat.

These are the so-called “normal American Muslims” who we are constantly told would never turn to terrorism.
