Government Tightens Control of Information on Gulf Mess

Never let a serious crisis go to waste, preaches Obama teleprompter-programmer Rahm “Dead Fish” Emanuel. After all, they’re opportunities for our moonbat rulers to inflict an agenda that might result in rebellion under normal circumstances. The Deepwater Horizon disaster has been an opportunity not only to demonize the energy sector (which the bumbling crony capitalists at BP make easy) and to push Tax & Charade, but to quietly tighten a Hugo Chavezesque fist around the dissemination of information.

Even the left-wing media that put the turtle on his post are growing alarmed. We saw CNN’s hapless Anderson Duper plead with Chairman Zero like a dumped girlfriend with no sense of self-respect, “We’re not the enemy.” Now MSNBC reports this:

The Obama administration is expected to take over control of the central information website on the Gulf oil spill response that has been run jointly by various agencies and BP for the 2:½ months since the rig explosion.

The Department of Homeland Security wants a one-stop shop for information that is completely overseen by the government as it settles into the long-haul of dealing with the response to the disaster.

There’s a term for “information that is completely overseen by the government”: state propaganda. Those who have escaped to America from totalitarian regimes are familiar with it.

BP and the federal government are part of a unified command that is working together to try to contain the oil gusher, but the government has been directing BP at every turn.

But there always comes a point where the puppets are dispensed with. However, progressives still have some use for the crippled remnants of free enterprise:

BP is helping pay for the current website. The government could still bill BP when it takes over the site.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) comments:

“Given that the government taking over the cleanup hasn’t exactly fixed things, it’s hard to imagine the government taking over a website making things much better either,” Issa, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said in a statement e-mailed to the AP.

“In recent weeks, we’ve heard directly from local officials pleading for less bureaucracy, more resources and expressing an overall frustration with this administration’s apparent pre-occupation with the public relations surrounding this catastrophe,” he said.

But for our Obamunist rulers, public relations is everything. They don’t have to control the flow of oil or even refrain from getting in the way of cleanup efforts. It’s much more important to control the flow of information.
