Kentucky High School to Hold Special Celebrations for Black Boys that Graduate With a 3.0 GPA

A high school in Kentucky has decided to hold a special celebration only for black boys who graduate with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Why is the school in Louisville, KY celebrating only black males who graduate with a middling 3.0 GPA? I mean, this is a perfectly good grade but it isn’t top scoring, it isn’t the sort of grades that should be held up as an example of excellence. And why only celebrate the boys? Why make such a big deal of a middling grade?

It all seems like celebrating mediocrity, doesn’t it?

Jefferson County Public Schools will host its first ever Males of Color Celebration Wednesday night, honoring seniors who are expected to graduate with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The event, which starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the Louisville Memorial Auditorium, 970 South Fourth Street, is part of the district’s efforts to support males of color.

Last year, Superintendent Donna Hargens and school board member Diane Porter attended an event at the White House with President Obama, and the district joined with 59 other large urban school systems in a first-ever collective commitment to improve education for young men of color.

It is certainly a good thing that kids graduate with a passing grade and 3.0 isn’t horrible, granted. But having a big celebration for this? It just seems odd.

On the other hand, maybe it is just that unusual for black males in Louisville to earn a 3.0 or higher grade? If that is so, mores the shame of it.
