On Wednesday an Op Ed appeared in the Los Angeles Times published under the name of Barack Obama in which it is outrageously claimed that ISIS terrorists have “legitimate grievances” and that ISIS is offering “angry” Middle Easterners a way to address those problems. He also thinks we need to offer them jobs and that will end all the hate they have indulged in at least since the 1400s.
In the February 17th op ed, Obama said that “the world” is at fault for not “offering today’s youth something better” and that we need to offer terrorists “economic, educational and entrepreneurial development” to help change come to the area.
More broadly, groups like al Qaeda and ISIL exploit the anger that festers when people feel that injustice and corruption leave them with no chance of improving their lives. The world has to offer today’s youth something better.
Governments that deny human rights play into the hands of extremists who claim that violence is the only way to achieve change. Efforts to counter violent extremism will only succeed if citizens can address legitimate grievances through the democratic process and express themselves through strong civil societies. Those efforts must be matched by economic, educational and entrepreneurial development so people have hope for a life of dignity.
I see. So if we open a McDonalds in the deserts of Iraq, why that’ll solve all of ISIS’s problems and Islamic extremism will disappear?
