Why The Race Is Moving Towards Romney: That First Debate Made The American People Realize Obama Is A Screw-up

Political junkies — and you are almost certainly one of them if you’re reading this post — pay close attention to politics.

Most Americans don’t.

They may read the paper and watch the nightly news, but they don’t have a deep understanding of what’s going on in the country because those outlets don’t provide that any more. Sure, if you read the New York Times and watch CNN every night, you may get what’s happening in the country in a broad sense, but compared to the sort of people who read blogs and listen to talk radio, your knowledge level is extremely low.

So, this is where most Americans have been. They know the country hasn’t been doing well, but they don’t really understand why. So, when Barack Obama gives them excuses and the mainstream media outlets that are almost universally on his side agree, they haven’t been sure what to think about it.

On the one hand, a bad performance is a bad performance. But, is it his fault? Could anyone have done better? All they hear from the mainstream media is how wonderful, smart, competent, and charismatic Obama is — it’s like listening to a mother describe her four year old.

Then came the first debate and what did they see? Barack Obama wasn’t prepared. He wasn’t looking Mitt Romney in the eye. He didn’t seem like a leader. He just wasn’t impressive in any way, shape or form.

That was when a lot Americans realized for the first time that Obama isn’t actually the sharpest knife in the drawer. In fact, he’s actually kind of a screw-up. That makes them feel much more comfortable about choosing Romney. But it also makes them much more reluctant to re-elect Obama for another term because now, they can’t say they didn’t know he was all that bad.

It’s like hiring a mechanic to fix your car, having problems with his work, and then walking in on him while he’s drunk on the job. Suddenly, you need an important repair done right before a long trip and you have to decide if you’re going back to that guy or trying someone new. The very fact that if it goes bad, you take more of the blame makes you less likely to choose the old mechanic even if you don’t know the new garage is better. After all, if the new guy turns out to be a screw up, that’s just bad luck, but if you’re stuck on the side of the road because the drunken mechanic did a terrible job, you’re going to feel like an idiot for going back to him.

We still don’t know how it will ultimately turn out, but the good news is that these debates are showing the American people what Barack Obama is really like so, ultimately, the American people are going to get the government they deserve.
