Gingrich In First Place? Called It! Plus: Newt Vs. Mitt!

Wow, that didn’t take long.

Public Policy Polling for November 14, 2011.

Newt Gingrich has taken the lead in PPP’s national polling. He’s at 28% to 25% for Herman Cain and 18% for Mitt Romney. The rest of the Republican field is increasingly looking like a bunch of also rans: Rick Perry is at 6%, Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul at 5%, Jon Huntsman at 3%, and Gary Johnson and Rick Santorum each at 1%.

Compared to a month ago Gingrich is up 13 points, while Cain has dropped by 5 points and Romney has gone down by 4.

Newt is still rising and he may have more staying power than some of the other candidates who came and went since people know right out of the gate that he has baggage.

Although Newt isn’t the only candidate that I’d support, I will say this much for him: Although he doesn’t have a perfect record, I do consider him to be a movement conservative while Romney isn’t a conservative at all. Also, I think Newt will turn out to be just as electable in the general as Romney, if not moreso. In addition, Let me also note that not only is Newt the single most competent person running for the presidency, I could actually get excited about his being President. Although I will support whoever the GOP nominee turns out to be, it would be nice to spend a year defending someone that I’d actually like to see running the country as opposed to the lesser of two evils.

Newt certainly isn’t a perfect candidate, but if he is the nominee, I’d certainly be okay with it and, of course, it would also mean that the candidate is Not Mitt Romney, which is very important to me.
