Our Cowboy President Is Making The World Hate Us

Remember when liberals were saying that they looked forward to having a President in office who would help rebuild America’s reputation around the world? It wasn’t all that long ago, was it? And of course, they immediately declared that Obama had done exactly that by bowing to everyone in site, trashing America overseas, pandering to our enemies, and giving our friends the cold shoulder.

In all fairness, there was some evidence that supported their position. Following in the footsteps of other great luminaries like Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, and Yassir Arafat, Obama was given a Nobel Peace Prize. Pew world opinion polls also seemed to show an uptick for America’s image — but, now the bloom is off the rose and stories like this one are starting to crop up everywhere:

The EU’s most senior figure has revealed disappointment with President Barack Obama’s presidency and has called for efforts to revive transatlantic relations.

Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, said the EU-US relationship was not ‘living up to its potential’ and was being weakened by disagreements on how to deal with the economic crisis.

Europe’s austerity strategy clashed with Mr Obama’s call to maintain fiscal stimulus at the G20 summit.

Mr Barroso cited climate change and trade reform as further reasons for the rift in an interview with The Times.

Here’s another one,

President Obama’s efforts to prove that U.S.-Israeli relations are on a better footing has not been successful in Israel, according to a new poll.

Forty-six percent of Israelis say Obama is pro-Palestinian, according to a Smith Research poll conducted by the Jerusalem Post. Only ten percent of the Israelis surveyed think the U.S. president is pro-Israeli.

The poll was taken of 515 Jewish Israelis.

How about one more? This one is titled, “US-Turkey tensions at new heights.”

Turkish media reports have exposed increased tensions between the US and Turkey in recent days, with disagreements flaring over the Gaza flotilla incident and efforts to stop Iran’s nuclear program.

Earlier this week, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan bashed the US for not taking more action following the death of a Turkish-American dual citizen in Israel’s raid on a Turkish-flagged ship attempting to break the blockade of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

Gee, what did liberals say when other countries started acting this way towards George Bush? Oh yeah, “How did he squander the good will of the world?” So, libs, how did Barack Obama squander the good will of the world?

Of course, good will and a buck fifty will get you a cup of coffee — if you’re not at Starbucks anyway, but the fact is that nations have their own interests and it isn’t all about “good will.” The Israelis have good reason to be distrustful of Obama, but what’s happening in Turkey probably has more to do with the rise of radical Islam in that country than anything Obama has done. In Europe, ironically, they’re zigging back towards fiscal discipline and capitalism while Obama is pursuing the same socialist policies they’ve started to move away from because of the Greek crisis. Then there’s the fact that they can’t trust him to be strong militarily and the fact that he’s been unwilling or unable to deliver more of the reforms that they want to handcuff the United States or benefit them.

That’s the nature of foreign relations. Ultimately, other nations care about what’s in their best interests. Bush, for all his flaws, understood that and he was much more competent than Obama when it came to actually getting things done to benefit the United States. Appeasement, bowing, and telling everyone how wonderful they are don’t get much done on the international front. It’s too bad that Obama will probably never figure that out.
