No Syrian Refugees for Michigan! Snyder Suspends Program After Paris Terrorist Attacks

Michigan’s Governor Rick Snyder has just announced that he will officially suspend the refugee resettlement program slated for his state. This is being done in light of the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris that took 132 lives and injured more than 350. Two of the gunmen are still on the loose as is a bomb maker. Michigan already has a radical Islamist problem – probably the worst in the nation. He did not say he was stopping the plan permanently, just until satisfactory security clearances and procedures are put in place. In my opinion, that would be never. One of the terrorists was a woman, another was a 15 year-old boy. Vetting these people would be next to impossible and I think Snyder is finally beginning to realize that.

From Detroit Free Press:

LANSING — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says he is suspending efforts to bring Syrian refugees to Michigan in light of the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday.

“Given the terrible situation in Paris, I’ve directed that we put on hold our efforts to accept new refugees until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security completes a full review of security clearances and procedures,” Snyder said in a statement released by his office on Sunday.

“Michigan is a welcoming state and we are proud of our rich history of immigration,” the statement said. “But our first priority is protecting the safety of our residents.”

More than 120 people were killed in Paris on Friday night, and hundreds more injured, in a series of suicide bombings and attacks on nightspots using automatic weapons.

Multiple news agencies have reported that a Syrian passport found at the scene of one of the attacks matches a refugee who traveled through Greece.

Snyder said in September he was working with the federal government to determine the process for accepting refugees from the ongoing crisis in Syria and the Middle East.

“Isn’t that part of being a good Michigander?” he asked at the time, while stressing that the refugees would have to be carefully screened to assure they were not security threats.

State Rep. Gary Glenn, R-Midland, issued a statement Saturday night calling on Snyder to “reverse his call to relocate Syrian refugees in the state.”

“We should not rush to offer an open door to the high-risk importation of individuals from a known hotbed of Islamic extremism,” Glenn said, disputing assertions that the refugees can be safely vetted.

Snyder decided to halt the refugee program on Saturday, after consultation with legislative leaders, prior to Glenn’s statement, spokesman Dave Murray said.

This is very good news and I hope a whole bunch of states will follow suit on this. We should not be bringing these refugees into the US. In fact, as Brad Thor suggested, we should stop all Visas for two years. I think we should also stop all immigration for two years while we get our act together national security wise. There should be no people coming in until we know where they came from, where they are going and staying, and what risk they pose to us. They should also have something to offer. We also need to vet those that have come here illegally. I don’t hold much hope out on any of this until a conservative is elected, but it needs to be done. Other politicians and most of the voting public in Michigan also wanted the refugee resettlement program stopped. Snyder offered his condolences to France. He has described himself as the most pro-immigration governor in the country. He established the Michigan Office for New Americans in 2014 and has been a longtime advocate of EB-5 Visas, which provide a path to citizenship for those who invest at least $1 million and create 10 jobs in the United States. In other words, he’s a Marxist Progressive on the Right. But at least he got this one right, probably due to pressure.
