Muslim college student who planned terror attacks faces judge, gets sentenced

A 22 year-old man from Ohio has been sentenced to 20 years in prison and then lifetime probation for plotting to kill police officers in conjunction with ISIS. Munir Abdulkader was a student at Xavier University when he became radicalized and started hearting ISIS. He claimed he was seeking martyrdom for Allah. Munir took to Twitter and posted a training video. He also said his cousin died fighting for ISIS. He was putting this stuff out on social media in 2014 and 2015.

In May of 2015, Abdulkader was emailing at least one member of ISIS overseas, who “directed and encouraged” Abdulkader to plan and execute “a violent attack” in the US. Acting US Attorney Benjamin Glassman said Abdulkader was in direct contact with Junaid Hussain, an ISIS recruiter. Hussain was killed in August of 2015 in an airstrike in Syria. This guy had been recruiting lone wolves in the US to carry out terrorism. He was also the one who was responsible for the release in 2015 of personal information on approximately 1,300 US military and government employees.

From Fox News:

An Ohio man who pleaded guilty to charges that he plotted attacks against a member of the U.S. military and a police station in support of the Islamic State group has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Munir Abdulkader (moo-NEER’ ab-duhl-KAH’-der) was sentenced Wednesday in Cincinnati. U.S. District Judge Michael Barrett sentenced the 22-year-old West Chester Township man after Abdulkader apologized to the court. After prison, he faces lifetime probation.

Court documents say Abdulkader pleaded guilty to attempting to kill officers and employees of the United States and providing material support of a foreign terrorist organization, along with a firearms count. He was arrested in May 2015.

Prosecutors had sought a 25-year prison sentence. Defense attorneys argued that similar cases have drawn sentences of 15 years or fewer.

Abdulkader pleaded guilty in federal court to multiple charges and admitted that the plan included abducting a military employee from the employee’s home and killing them. If it all went as Abdulkader planned, the execution would have been video-recorded and used as recruiting propaganda for ISIS.

Sometime afterwards, he planned to attack a police station using guns and Molotov cocktails, according to court documents. He admitted traveling to a police station in May of 2015 to conduct surveillance. He also admitted going to a shooting range where he learned how to use certain guns and practiced shooting them. These attacks were going to go down in southern Ohio, but no precise location has been disclosed.

Abdulkader was arrested in May of 2015 by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, after a controlled purchase of an AK-47-style rifle. He was indicted last year. He pleaded guilty to attempting to kill officers and employees of the United States, a gun charge and providing support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Abdulkader is a native of Eritrea in eastern Africa and moved with his family to the US. He became a citizen in 2006, when he was 11 years-old.

This guy tripped up when he started dealing with a confidential informant about his desire and intention to travel to Syria in order to join ISIS as a fighter. Abdulkader said he “definitely wanted to be a fighter ‘for sure, for sure, for sure,’ and that he knew there were big consequences.” He secured a passport, saved money for the trip and researched the logistical details of traveling to Syria, officials said. In late April, however, Abdulkader expressed concerns about the ability to travel and postponed his original departure date of May 2nd, 2015. It turns out that was a bad call on his part and he was arrested on May 21st, 2015. That was the day he forked over $350 for the semiautomatic rifle.

I think he got off way too easy with the 20 year sentence. What makes anyone think he won’t get out and finish what he started? Once a Jihadist, always a Jihadist.
