Just One More Post About Putting Helen Thomas Out To Pasture

Commentary on Helen Thomas being put out to pasture has not been in short supply on RWN. Here’s Warner Todd Huston, Melissa Clouthier, Kathleen McKinley & Donald Douglas all discussing Dame Helen’s dismissal here at RWN.

However, since it’s still a hot topic and since I have a slightly different take on it, I wanted to toss in my own two cents or, perhaps more aptly, my own set of beads, since I believe that was the sort of money they used when Helen Thomas was a child.

First off, here’s the conversation that got Helen Thomas in trouble,

Nesenoff: Any comments on Israel? We’re asking everybody today–
Thomas: Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine.
Nesenoff: Whoa! Any better comments?
Thomas, laughing: Remember, these people are occupied, and it isn’t their land – not German, and not Polish.
Nesenoff: So where should they go? What should they do?
Thomas: Go home.
Nesenoff: Where’s home?
Thomas: Poland. Germany.
Nesenoff: So just go back to Poland and Germany?
Thomas: And America, and everywhere else.

Setting aside the fact that the Israelis are no more on occupied land than the United States, France, Russia, or any other modern nation that took their land from someone else at some point, I don’t find Thomas’ comments to be beyond the pale. Don’t get me wrong: I do think Thomas hates Jews. In fact, if they ever fired up Auschwitz again, that old bat would probably be dancing in the streets.

But, we live in a world where Israel’s neighbors in Iran and the Palestinian territories openly advocate genocide. Moreover, much of the Left in the United States and worldwide universally condemns any Israeli attempts to defend their population and universally supports anything that helps kill more Jews. In other words, “death to the Jews” is a mainstream sentiment on the Left even:  if most of them don’t have the guts to say what they believe.

So against that backdrop, are Helen Thomas’ comments all that offensive? I don’t think so. Personally, I think she was just an easy target who came along at a politically sensitive time. Here you have an openly partisan, nasty tempered liberal curmudgeon who’s not even a reporter any:  more wasting everyone’s time at presidential press conferences. She didn’t belong there and anyone who was honest, liberal or conservative, knows that to be so. Moreover, because Obama has aimed so many kicks at Israel’s rib cage and because the Democrats are DESPERATE to turn out their Jewish base in November, they were willing to speak out against Thomas in a way that they normally wouldn’t. So, that resulted in a perfect storm and the USS Ancient Harpy went right down to the bottom of the Sea of Faux Outrage. It couldn’t have happened to a more:  deserving woman.
