After a judge awarded $140 million to Hulk Hogan against Gawker… the sleaze peddler is now officially bankrupt and filing Chapter 11. The judge recommended shutting down the company and selling it off to settle debts. The auction of assets starts at $100 million, which one assumes will go to pay off, at least partially, this settlement. Bankruptcy was probably filed for liquidation purposes and to fend off future lawsuits. Gawker has ruined countless lives and destroyed the privacy of many more. Good riddance. Twitter went ballistic over the news and the celebration began in earnest.

Gawker

From BizPac Review:

It’s long overdue.

The left-wing media organization Gawker.com, which recently was ordered to pay wrestler Hulk Hogan $140 million, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and put the company’s assets up for sale, according to USA Today.

Gawker executive Ziff Davis has already placed a bid up for the company’s assets, which starts at $100 million ahead of an auction that is set to be supervised by the bankruptcy court.

Davis is planning on buying Gawker’s blogs, but will not assume the company’s liabilities. The site’s liabilities are apparently estimated to be $100 million to $500 million.

Gawker has been the subject of several high-profile lawsuits recently. I have no sympathy for scum like this. Ziff Davis, who is an executive with Gawker, is angling to buy the assets and forego the liabilities. If successful, that means Gawker will start over under another identity and keep on going. Hogan and others will probably never see their full settlements, but they will still get a big chunk and the satisfaction of seeing a rag like Gawker go down in flames – at least temporarily. It was reported last month that providing financial backing for the surge of lawsuits is billionaire PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, who called his crusade “philanthropic.” In 2007, Thiel was outed as gay by Gawker Media’s discontinued Valleywag blog. Good for Thiel – he did the world a service. It’s actually quite common now to bankroll lawsuits. The company’s bankruptcy declaration ensures that it will be able to continue to pay staffers in the interim. I don’t feel sorry for anyone working there either… they know who they work for and stay there anyway. These are not nice or principled people.
