Yesterday was a very, very sad day. The Blue Angels were doing a practice flight over Smyrna, Tennessee when things went horribly wrong. One of the jets crashed in front of terrified onlookers. They say Marine Capt. Jeff Kuss could have ejected and saved himself once he knew the plane was going down, but in one last heroic act, he chose to stay in the plane and somehow get it away from the apartment building it would have hit. He saved countless lives, but sadly forfeited his own. He’s a true hero and he will be sorely missed. Over Colorado Springs, Colorado, a Thunderbirds F-16 crashed in a flyover practice run for the USAF. That pilot survived fortunately. He ejected safely.
From the Independent Journal:
A practice flight for the elite aviation squad The Blue Angels went terribly wrong in Smyrna, Tennessee on Thursday. Horrified onlookers describe a “huge fireball” and a plume of smoke rising into the air after a U.S. Navy jet McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet crashed.
The Tennesseean reported:
One person has been reported dead after a U.S. Navy Blue Angels jet crashed following takeoff during a practice flight around 3 p.m. Thursday, according to a county fire dispatcher.
Larry Farley, Rutherford County fire chief, said his dispatchers were told one person was killed.
A US official told the Associated Press that the pilot was Marine Capt. Jeff Kuss. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. According to his official Blue Angels biography, Kuss joined the elite acrobatics team in 2014 and accumulated more than 1,400 flight hours. Kuss was a native of Durango, Colorado and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Marines in 2006. He previously served in Afghanistan before joining the Blue Angels. It takes a special kind of person and hero to willingly give his life to save others. Kuss was such a man and a Marine until the end. My prayers are with his family and the Blue Angels. May God speed.
