North Korean Missile Launch Hacked? Missile Explosion Could Have Been US Cyber Attack

Former British Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind just threw another theory into the story of yesterday’s failed North Korean missile launch. Sir Rifkind is now claiming that American intelligence used cyber warfare in the past to interfere with North Korea’s missile tests and that there’s a “strong belief” in the community that Trump’s administration was directly responsible for the failure to launch.

As reported yesterday, North Korea had been sending strange radio signals around the time of the launch where the missile, according to the U.S. Pacific command, “blew up almost immediately.”

In an interview with the BBC, Sir Rifkind said:

“It could have failed because the system is not competent enough to make it work, but there is a very strong belief that the US – through cyber methods – has been successful on several occasions in interrupting these sorts of tests and making them fail,” he told the BBC.

Sir Malcolm went on: “But don’t get too excited by that, they’ve also had quite a lot of successful tests.

“They are an advanced country when it comes to their nuclear weapons programme. That still remains a fact – a hard fact.”

In the last few days, the region has been under higher tension due to an American aircraft carrier group headed toward the Korean peninsula. Before the launch, the KN-08 missile was paraded around Pyongyang marking 105 years since the birth of North Korea’s founder, Kim Il-Sung. Not only is it significant due to this anniversary, but for the fact that Vice President Mike Pence is currently visiting the South Korean capital of Seoul.

As for Trump’s response, the carriers and Mike Pence seem to be all he needs to say.

The “president has no further comment on the launch,” Secretary of Defense James Mattis told reporters Saturday evening. Trump’s next move with regards to North Korea is unclear. The U.S. presently has a carrier strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson operating in waters near the Korean peninsula.
