Is Harry Reid Saving Mitch McConnell From Himself?

Rich Lowry at The Corner talks about the Democratic coupling of 1.5 trillion in cuts with Mitch McConnell’s surrender on the debt limit.

Interestingly, the McConnell proposal seems to be getting better with Democratic input, although it’s all still very murky. I think this goes to show that Democrats want to be able to say they paired some cuts with a debt-limit increase. I may have vastly over-estimated Republican leverage on the debt limit, but I think those who immediately endorsed the original version of McConnell under-estimated it.

In other words, McConnell’s original proposal went so far to the Left that even Harry Reid looked at it and said, “C’mon, get serious! Not even we think we can get away with this!”

Wouldn’t it be funny if the ultimate compromise ended up being some variation of this plan, which would happen because the Republicans were too gutless to hang in there and demand spending cuts while the Democrats were too gutless to accept exactly what they wanted in the first place, which is no spending cuts at all?
