BEAUTIFUL: Next Round of ESPN Layoffs Will Cut Budget by -$80 Million in Salary and Benefits

It’s official… there’s a bloodbath in layoffs at ESPN. Wish I could say I feel bad for them… nope, fresh out. This round of layoffs will cut $80 million in salary and benefits from ESPN’s budget. Wow, talk about cutting the fat. ESPN let go 100 employees back in April and that will be comparable to this cut. It’s sooo stupid. If they hadn’t deliberately gone political and had done their freaking jobs, a lot of this wouldn’t have happened. Of course the NFL has contributed to this a lot with letting their players take a knee during the National Anthem. Bankruptcy all around! Works for me.

Three weeks ago, it was reported that more layoffs were on the way sometime after Thanksgiving. They are looking at laying off another 100 employees at the 38 year-old cable sports network. Sporting News is saying that there’s a palpable dread among the network’s employees with many assuming “it’s not if, but when” they are laid off. Wonder if SportsCenter Jemele Hill will get her walking papers? She really should.

Sports Illustrated has reported that ESPN’s SportsCenter is a prime target for the cuts taking place. It has been in the middle of a political storm after Hill repeatedly violated the network’s social media policy, in one case calling President Donald Trump a “white supremacist.” She violated their policy a second time when she called for a boycott of the Dallas Cowboys by advertisers. That got her butt suspended for two weeks. She should have been fired for it, but she’s a Marxist and a black nationalist, so she gets a slap on the wrist. However, she’s dead weight now and probably won’t survive these cuts.

I don’t think anyone is surprised by this development. ESPN has been losing over 10,000 subscribers a month. They pay billions in broadcast fees levied by the various national leagues. They have reportedly lost more than 13 million subscribers over the last five years. Ouch. Sporting News is reporting that ESPN lost $1 billion in affiliate revenues after losing those 13 million subscribers. I’m surprised they’ve stayed afloat this long. They were also foolish enough to make salary package deals with employees to prevent them from quitting to go to work for rivals such as Fox Sports 1. Some of those deals require them to pay those employees until they begin a new job, even if they are laid off. That doesn’t include 401ks and other bennies.

I don’t think ESPN is long for this world. I know that a few investors are giving them cash infusions, but that won’t last long. They’ve done this to themselves. If you are so intent on being politically right that you are willing to commit corporate suicide, then you get what you deserve.
