Tax Day and Your Fair Share

If you look up from your work on Tax Day to see a bloated, hostile federal government that refuses to honor even its most basic responsibilities such as securing the border from foreign incursion, you may ask yourself, “What the hell am I paying taxes for?” The answer: So that others don’t have to.

According to estimates from the Tax Policy Center, the top 20% of earners pay 83.9% of all federal income taxes. At the same time, they make only 51.3% of total U.S. income.

Meanwhile, the bottom fifth, which earns 4.5% of all U.S. income, pays -2.2% of federal income taxes. In other words, those in this quintile, instead of paying an income tax, actually get money from Washington after Washington has taken it from everybody else.

The top 1% of earners — who had so much hate directed at them when the Occupy movement captured the media’s fancy a few years ago — pays 45.7% of income taxes while making 17.1% of national income. The middle quintile pays 5.9% of federal income taxes while earning 14.8% of national income.

Nonetheless the socialist kleptocrats who run the governmedia have the herd mooing that high earners should be looted even more rapaciously.

A Pew poll in mid-February found that 72% of Americans think “some wealthy people don’t pay their fair share” of federal taxes.

Our own IBD/TIPP Poll found last month that 90% of Democrats favor “raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans to pay for programs that will benefit the lower and middle classes.” Two-thirds of independents agree while only 36% of Republicans hold the same view.

Democrats revealed to us a lot about themselves and their party when 71% told our poll they’d still favor hiking taxes on the rich even if it meant fewer jobs.

Which it certainly would. For example, look at the effect on employment of ObamaCare, the largest tax hike in history.

Plank No. 2 of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto:

A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.

The USSA certainly qualifies. But of course it will never be enough until Big Government literally owns everything, as in the Soviet Union.

If Tax Day hit you hard, look at the bright side: it’s not as bad this year as it will be next year.

Almost there…
