This Week In Quotes: May 27-June 2

My advice (to Anthony Weiner) would be to come clean and clear it up. Again, perhaps he’s trying, but I know there’s a lot of explaining going on but without a lot of clarity. And again, the American people are right in saying that they don’t have tolerance for this repeated kind of activity going on surrounding their elected leaders. Think about his wife – I mean, I’m really saddened for his wife, and I think they’ve only been married a short time. — Eric Cantor

But consider this: It’s not that Obama can’t speak clearly. It’s that he employs the intellectual stammer. Not to be confused with a stutter, which the president decidedly does not have, the intellectual stammer signals a brain that is moving so fast that the mouth can’t keep up. The stammer is commonly found among university professors, characters in Woody Allen movies and public thinkers of the sort that might appear on C-SPAN but not CNN. — Meghan Daum

Russia isn’t the only nuclear-armed non-ally out there. China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea are all nuclear armed; Iran is moving heaven and earth to become so; and unstable nations like Burma and Venezuela are hanging out with just the rogue elements that can put them on the list as well. In 2011, we should be putting everything we can behind establishing missile defense, rather than MAD, as the global basis for security. — J.E. Dyer

This month, in the Middle East, has seen the unmaking of the President of the United States. More than that, it has witnessed the lowest prestige of America in the region since Roosevelt met King Abdul Aziz on the USS Quincy in the Great Bitter Lake in 1945. — Robert Fisk

(Palin) did a disservice to every woman in America. She knew from the first month of pregnancy that kid was going to be Down’s Syndrome. It’s brain dead. A virtual vegetable. She carries it to all these different political events against abortion, she did it just because she didn’t want to say she’d had an abortion. How long is it going to live? Another 12, 15 years? Doesn’t even know it’s in this world. So what kind of compassionate conservative is she? I don’t think anybody will want her near the White House. — Larry Flynt

I have respectfully declined the president’s invitation to the White House today. I don’t intend to spend my morning being lectured to by a president whose failed policies have put our children and grandchildren in a huge burden of debt. — Rep. Jeff Landry (La.)

(Anthony) Weiner has now changed the official story from “hacked” to “prank”, presumably because one requires law enforcement intervention and the other can be dismissed with an eye-roll. He is trying to seem above this little “sending lewd photos to a 21-year old” scandal. He won’t answer whether that’s him in the photo. He nonsensically compares the photo being posted to a heckler at an event (which would only make sense if he heckled himself). He brusquely says he’d like to go back to work. I’m sure he would. I’m sure Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Mark Sanford, Bill Clinton, Eliot Spitzer, Chris Lee and heck, John Edwards, wanted to go back to their very important work too. Our world doesn’t work like that. The truth will come out and it seems very obvious what that truth will be. — Karol Markowicz

The great paradox is that Socialists like DSK want to run their own countries and the entire planet while enjoying the power, prestige and salaries associated with doing so. But at no point are they ever accountable or responsible for any results. — Rachel Marsden

I’m in, like, dating Babylon. Like, I go on dates with men and, literally, like Sarah Palin will come up in like the first 20 minutes, and that doesn’t put me in the mood. Like, talking about Sarah Palin. And they just want to know gossip, and I’m just kind of taking a little hiatus from dating right now, because I just don’t want to talk about Sarah Palin. — Meghan McCain

The auto thing is a good example too of where I wish Obama would just, if he would just ratchet it up another notch. Yes, he saved the jobs of all my friends back in Michigan. But now that we sort of control the car companies, let’s get them doing mass transit. Let’s get them doing things that are going to save this planet. Because the internal combustion engine is not going to get us to the 22nd century. That’s just not going—we’re not going to have a planet. That has to stop. And I just thought: gee, we have this power. You know, you can do things. — Michael Moore

You have to drink a lot of Guinness before President Obama’s budget starts to look ‘balanced’ and ‘serious’. The White House has no problem attacking conservatives who have the courage to propose plans to save Medicare, but then the President shrinks from the fight when the tables are turned. It’s pretty sad that one funny tweet is all that’s needed to expose President Obama’s irresponsible hypocrisy. — Tim Pawlenty

Millions of dollars of negative ads are being run to try and scare seniors and trying to confuse seniors. You know, the irony of this Bill, is with all this Mediscare that the Democrats are running, it’s Obamacare itself that ends Medicare as we know it. Obamacare takes half a trillion dollars from Medicare – not to make it more solvent but to spend on this other government program, Obamacare. And then it creates this 15 panel board of unelected, unaccountable, bureaucrats starting next year to price control and ration Medicare for current seniors. — Paul Ryan

Hamas knows that Israel will do everything to release Gilad Schalit. [Hamas Prime Minister Ismail] Haniyeh and the Hamas chief of staff don’t know where Gilad is being held. A group is holding him, and it knows. Many of them are no longer with us. [They are] unfortunate ones, all sorts of accidents [are befalling them]. Everyone who was involved in the kidnapping won’t need to worry about an old age home. They won’t get there. — Israeli Homeland Security Minister Matan Vilnai

This “Party of No” rhetoric was parroted by nearly every liberal writer. It is less common today, now that the tables have turned. The new Republican House majority has passed a serious proposal to reform the broken entitlement system and avert national insolvency. Not only has Reid refused to work with the GOP on a budget, but he said it would be “foolish” for Democrats to release one of their own. And last Wednesday, Senate Democrats gave new meaning to the label the “Party of No” when they held a series of four budget votes. Not a single Democrat voted for any budget proposal, including Obama’s own plan, which was rejected by a unanimous 97-to-0 vote. — The Washington Examiner

I was perhaps, if you forgive me, a little bit stiff yesterday. — Anthony Weiner to a female reporter asking about the penis pic he apparently sent from his Twitter account

Two things are infinite. One is the expanding universe, and the other is media attention to Sarah Palin, who’s a genius at manipulating it. — George Will

We don’t like Meghan McCain because she is a multi-millionaire and gets writing jobs for which she is utterly unqualified for, not because of her breast size or her butt, neither of which concerns us at all. When you make her “a victim of the Internet” because she posts pictures of her big boobs, which for most women are considered an asset, then you let her off the hook for being an ultra-rich Republican who is taking writing jobs away from talented non-rich people. Even clicking the NYT link is probably forwarding her “writing career,” which exists solely because her dad is a failed presidential candidate from four years ago. Thank you for your co-operation. — Wonkette JR.
